The A39 had been completely closed here after a major accident. well, the A39 is limited to 100 km/h from Flechtorf to its end at the B188 for some years now, it was more fun when it was unlimited the whole way.

But at least, you can still enjoy the full power of your car from Flechttorf to Braunschweig. :lol:

And 170 is a speed that even I only exceeded once or twice. :lol: The first time before I made my drivers licence. We had been a bit on the late end for picking up the next student after my autobahn lesson, so my driving instructor ordered my to "try out how fast the car can get"... kicked a TDI Diesel Golf to nearly 190 km/h then :lol:

My old car was limited to 174 km/h, my new car should be capable of reaching 184 km/h ... on 1.2 litres of displacement. Trust me - many cars can drive that fast here in Europe.

Uh, when I made my driver's license I drove 125 mph (200 km/h) during a driving lesson. Without even having a license.

And that's the problem, it's not really fun to watch your fuel gauge drop like that. I'd even say 140 km/h is the upper limit you normally do.

Oh, its perfectly fine to go to 150 km/h. The consumption is high, but you can still cover some terrain with it.

Much worse is being in a traffic jam and watching your current fuel consumption... easily 40l / 100 km, because you are mostly starting and stopping.

Hm. I tried that with my previous car.
210km/h, slightly downhill on an otherwise relatively flat road.

It's not exactly an experience i want to repeat.

For one thing, the terrain becomes very compressed - i walked over that road several times and it's essentially flat, going slightly up and slightly down.

But doing 200km/h over the same terrain make it appear like a roller-coaster - you instinctively want to slow down when approaching the U part in fear of hitting the side, or ∩ part in fear of flying off.

For the other, the sound the wind makes in the windows carries a dread feeling of something stretched to a breaking point...

And there is always that nagging certainty that the police will set a trap spot on that part of the road, despite the fact that you drove over it 5 minutes ago the other way without seeing one, and they never done it over the last 15 years anyway.

All in all, going within the (120km/h) limit is so much less stressful than going over the limit (150-ish that 60% of the people do).
No need to constantly watch for police traps, less fuel used, less attention needed on the road.
The price is that you will arrive about 30 minutes later... After driving for 4-5 hours over about 400 km.
Whoopty-do. Not worth the stress.

Yep. We were in our Focus with the 1 liter engine. Official top speed is 187 or so km/h, but in December with deserted roads, perfect temperatures and possibly a small downhill we made 205 or so indicated km/h Since the speedometers tend to be a bit optmisitic and winter tires (which were certified for up to 210, I checked ) have a marginally smaller diameter I guess we did somewhere between 185 and 195 km/h. Had no GPS active at the time.

But yes, fuel economy goes down the drain: during the 350 km or so crossing Switzerlandat 80-120km/h with A/C on we averaged 5.7 l/100km, which I moved to 5.9 in the 140 km stint through southern Germany, without A/C. But one-two times a year it's fun.

EDIT: with our Ford Ka (69 hp, essentially a Fiat 500 underneath) which has a top speed of 156 km/h it was possible to reach 169 km/h (as marked on the GPS) for a very brief time. Again, checking the tyre rating and condition is a must.

Americans build Cars that are big, loud, impressive and drink a lot.

Everyone else optimise their cars for mass, aerodynamics, traction and efficiency to keep consumption as low as possible. As a side effect, they can also go pretty damn fast

I'm one of those people that never goes over the speed limit. I find the experience quite rewarding, actually. Not just because I'm having a nice, relaxing drive, but because I'm also forcing everyone behind me to drive at the same speed.

Most people here drive 10 km/h over the limit... until they catch up with me :lol:

The "highways" in Slovenia have a speed limit of 130 km/h, but I speed up to that when overtaking. Usually I drive at a nice, relaxing 110 km/h. The time lost is usually only a few minutes, but it does show quite a difference on the consumption.

Normally I do the same, and today too I didn't exceed any speed limit if I had to drive the same stretch of road everyday I'd find it too stressfull to drive over 130-140 km/h.

There is a patch of Interstate between Tuscaloosa AL and the Mississippi line that I've hit 130 mph with my Hyundai. It was cool, a little nerve wracking, but cool.

I normally drive maybe 5 mph over the limit because I like getting 40+ gpm. I get slightly better gpm at 74 than 70 (mph) or at least the car says I do.

But Imperial or American gallons? The Focus can display fuel consumption in MPG, but apparently uses british gallons, which are bigger, it appears. Turns out that getting 40 (American) MPG isn't as trivial as it sounds. :huh:

OK 40+ MPG.

I think that have goofed that because of the industrial work I do. We move a lot of water around to keep things cool. 35K GPM is normal flow rate for ERCW (you should see the pipes!).

The tachometers of most cars show the speed about 10% above actual, so these people probably are only slightly above the speed limit and still within the tolerance.

55-60 mph(88-96 km/h) for me when driving long distances. 1. I get to my destination. 2. traffic density makes little difference. 3. Its kinda nice to do a 400-450 mile round trip on one tank. 4. I'm relaxed when I get there. 5. less overall life taken out of the car.

Besides the number of times I over take a car that has sped past me is just amusing.
