What I like about linux is the legwork. (that holds true for any *NIX)
I can do (or at least try) what I want, how I want, with what I want.
gmail running slow? try ~32 different clients.

All my linuxes have been pretty much hand built from a most basic debian install. Messing with the rc.s, compiling all programs with optimal gcc settings. That is the fun in it. And if you are not someone that puts in the disc, installs, and then uses it, you will experience much better performance in almost every aspect of computing. most noticable in boot times. A custom kernel and proper init scripts does wonders :)

However, I am so incredibly annoyed by the idea of a reboot, that I don't do much right now with linux/bsd. Simply because there is virtualy no OEM support and you simply can't code every app for multiple OS. Virtualisation techniques will eliminate most of the problems we experience now. Software makers stopped coding for machines ages ago and everything is done via some sort of API. You'll see where I am going with this...

In case you didn't know (and you won't know, if you already do, drop me a line!) my nickname would not have came into existence without linux.
TSPenguin is short for The Sadistic Penguin. It came up when I still fragged everybody like there is no tomorrow when running ASCII quake :D

Why is it that every time there is a political scandal it gets dubbed "****-gate" by the media? It makes my teeth grind. The latest one we have here is Iguanagate.

Why is it you flag features a british one with a star underneath (OK, I know that...)
But why is it there is a question mark next to it? Does it have something to do with questionmarkgate? Or is it simply because I am listening to György Ligeti - Requiem for Soprano, Mezzo Soprano, Two Mixed Choirs and Orchestra performed by the Bavarian Radio Orchestra under direction of Francis Travis on maximum volume?

Assuming this is not a rhetorical question, the figure of speech originated with the Watergate scandal during the Nixon administration, and became a common suffix for all scandal names during the Iran-Contra scandal of the 1980s when someone dubbed it "Contra-gate", and things took off from there. The funniest was "Monica-gate".

I wasn't aware that this speech phenomenon had spread beyond the borders of the U.S.

If your scandal gets a "-gate" suffix, does that mean it's UMMU compatible?

Nooooooooo!! Mroe Ptlicois! I htae Ptlicois! Wlil it be UMMU cloapmtmibe?

Did I just found counter example for the "You can read scrambled text as long as the first and last letters are in the right order" ?

Just on the off chance that you were being serious:

The star beneath the union jack has seven points, one for each state/territory (that's what we're taught in school, but there's actually eight in total). The question mark is the souther cross, the signifying that we are in the southern hemisphere.

No, you didn't. I can read it. Doesn't make any sense right now though, politics can't be ummu compatible. ;)

And going back to Linux crappiness, I can't use anything other than SuSE, as none of the other versions of linux work well enough with netware.

The question was rhetorical, but thanks for the explanation anyway. The "-gate" usage is very wide spread. There is even a Wiki article about it - quite a number from outside the US. Some outstanding examples:

"Forest Gategate"
"Nipplegate"

Can't figure out what this word is...so I guess the theory fails.

What unussapiens said ^. In addition, the lack of uniqueness of our flag drives me crazy. To start with, it is virtually the same as New Zealand. Secondly, it features another country's flag in the corner (same as at least 4 other nations that I can think of). Lastly, we are not the only country in the world that can see the southern cross (at least 5 other nations feature it on their flags). Call me unpatriotic, but can't we do better than that?

Well... combining random colors and ordering them in bars is not really inventive. Yet it has great historical significance.

To be honest, I don't like your flag either. From a distance all you can do is guess that it might be a former british colony... or some asian country with a flag composition kinda like this one...
btw, I did not know that it is supposed to be the southern cross... Most muslim states with a crescent moon on their flag are more unique than that, they at least feature a depiction of a specific event that looks different from different locations. Compare those flags next to each other, you'll see what I mean.

Didn't you guys had a vote several years back related to staying in the commonwealth or am I confusing something here?

About 10 years ago now, A vote to become a republic can happen every 10 years so it may happen again soon.

On flags, I think green and gold with a kangaroo would be good

We had a "republic" referendum in 1999. Not all republicans liked the method of election of the president that was proposed. This was a monarchist strategy to to split the support for the republic and effectively resulted in them winning, though not by a lot. Most republican's (myself included) preferred a two stage referendum, ie, ask first if you want a republic and if that gets up, ask about how you want to elect the president. The monarchist government of the day (led by QEII fanboy John Howard) wouldn't let this happen though.

The republican debate essentially revolved around removing the British monarch as our head-of-state. The was never any talk about leaving the Commonwealth of Nations.

Now that we have a pro-republic leader and government there is a good chance.

I quite like the flag of the eureka stockade. I'm not sure if the story behind it is taught in other states, but it's a fairly major unit in primary school in victoria.

Mostly understandable if you are prepared to read each word but I find it mostly incomprehensible when scan reading, which is what I would normally do for a big post like that.

Why don't Orbitnauts band together and raise funds to build a shrine to the Probe?
