I finally realized the simple solution to finding midterms in the massive stacks that they get returned in: Draw something on the back of it!

For me, the distinctive sloppiness of my own handwriting was always sufficient, at least for stuff that wasn't typed.

Different card companies require different amounts of verification from merchants, but it's not often much.

Rule of thumb: The older the cashier the more likely she will look at your signature.

You may laugh, but they're actually quite aggressive when they feel its appropriate. Other students at Uwaterloo have mentioned being charged by groups of them when they want to be mean. Its pretty much to be expected when they're so used to being around humans so often.

I think the issue of illegible handwriting is a bad of XXI century. I also write very badly, so much so that my teachers ask me to translate the alien language to latin writing:facepalm:.
