What would be the purpose of such reequest?

Maybe for simulating on-board cameras, like the Soyuz approach and docking camera (which improved over the years but was quite grainy at some point) ?

Now the grainy thing might also be caused by the quality of the link (and Soviet Union had issues with that, as they didn't have as many tracking stations as NASA).
