I'm currently using DDS converter 2 but it has all sorts of limitations and I'm wondering if there's a better converter out there. Does anyone know of a good (preferably free) one?

i use paint.net just google it it is actually a photo editor its basicly photoshop but free i use it for all my textures you can open .dds and save as .dds

GIMP with its DDS extension. Reads and writes DDS just fine. Just make sure to set it to DXT1/with mipmaps.

What limitations has it got? I used it last time a long ago, so I don't recall its limitations.

The best IMO (at least for my needs) is DxTex, but not the one included with Orbiter, but the newer version, that is included for example with DirectX 9c SDK (I don't know if it's included in DX10/11 SDKs).

I have DDS plug-in for GIMP too, and I use it sometimes, but I usually make final textures with DxTex.

alex beat mme to it with Paint.NET
it's quite a formidable tool, being free and all... even having photoshop, at times i use it simply because it's so much lighter and doesn't take forever to load up...:sweet:

plus, PS's .dds exporter doesn't work with orbiter for whatever reason
