Gaming Digital Combat Simulator Thread

My PC was misbehaving again but I think it may be something I did. A restore point got it working today. I should be able to get on tomorrow. As for WWII stuff in the future, I only have FC3 and A10C for now. Actually, I don't even see much else available on Steam...

If you would like. We could try it again this saturday at 1800 UTC.

What about sunday at 0900 UTC? Would this be better time of day for you over in canada? :)

I'd be able to make it to the 0900 appointment, if I can drag myself to the computer that early.

I would join this weekend but I will not be around for those times unfortunately. Mrs. JSwift being the determining factor, not the times. :)

A lot of people in Canada may have Monday and Tuesday as holidays this week (Tuesday July 1st is a national holiday). I'll be free from around Monday 0000 UTC for a couple of days - a bit late for the party.

0900 UTC is 0200 local for me, lol. Nothing a little coffee can't cure for a while but I can just picture falling asleep at the controls and waking up to the warning sirens just before impact.

I'm considering the Fw 190 as well but I just bought everything else during the sale and there's so much to learn already. I think I'll hop into the P-51D and try to learn it over the next few weeks.

Quick_Nick, what about the free TF-51D for the WWII stuff?

I can shift the sunday time to 1800 UTC too, if it fits better. Was just a proposal.

Server is now open. Same configuration as last time:

Richy's Pirate Flight School
No password

That could work, though I do have to go to work an hour and a half later...

Ok then. Tomorrow, server will be open @ 1700 UTC.

Server is open now. Same mission as yesterday... as everyday. ^^

Dropped in a for a little while, didn't really accomplish anything (still rather new to DCS.)

Highlights:
- Taxiing the wrong way out of the hangar, and winding up at a dead end.
- Ejecting in frustration/confusion.
- Getting hit by a SAM because I don't understand the RADAR very well.
- Watching Richy & co. fly around.

Hopefully, in some time, there will be a week or two hiatus before classes start, and I can come up to scratch on my F-15 skills. Until then, don't fly too close to me.

Don't worry. Thats what our sessions are for. To get comfortable with your aircraft. The mission offers all kind of training opportunities.

But I wonder. In the mission, the F10 setting "fog of war" is force-enabled. As soon as the UAV and/or the AWACs is airborne, I can see all enemy units on the F10 map in visual range to friendly aircraft (~50nm). I think of it as a simplyfied version of JTAC.
But it seems nobody else joining the mission can. Does anybody know why? Is this just a "hosts-feature", or is there a setting to enable the same view also for clients?

Are you maybe set as Game Master or so?

Just one quick question for those who fly the A-10C, regarding instrumentation;

Is that HSI fully usable?

By this I mean, are you able to manually rotate the CDI to select a bearing from which to approach a selected waypoint, or is it still set to a "fixed" bearing from the previous waypoint in the sequence to the currently selected one, as on the SU-25 HSI (eg.)?

Thanks for any info pertaining to this.

There's a Course knob if that's what you mean. (i.e. I think so)

Have you tried turning the knob to see if the course pointer rotates and if the CDI deflects as you do this?

In any case; thanks! I found what I was looking for here. Quite a few others of them on the web, in fact, so I won't have to get the A-10C.

Just yet, that is. :)

Nope, definitively not. As a game master, you can see all the units from beginning, but the units become visible as soon as a friendly unit sees them. And, enemy units are half transparent and friendly fully opaque, which is what I espect from the "fog of war" setting. I just wonder, why nobody else is able to profit from this setting.

edit:
But what could be, is that I'm as a server by default "ground commander". I can order units around and coordinate artillery attacks. I wonder if other players can do the same, when not specifically selected the "Ground Commander" slot, and if the view of enemy units is the same.

Any servers going online tomorrow (July 5)?

Regarding the fog of war - I tried a couple of online training servers this week but could not see enemy units appear on the F10 map, even as I flew over them close to them (before being shot down by SAMs). I'm new to online and unfamiliar with host settings so it could be as the host intended.

I was also expecting to see my (and any friendlies') flightplans and waypoints on the F10 map. Is this also a host setting? This information does appear on the kneeboard though.

This depends on the settings of the servers. I'm not sure if you can see which settings are enabled on the server, but I guess that most disable the visibility of enemy units on their server.
If you like, I can host an other session today (5 July) @1800 UTC?
But tomorrow is also possible.

Any last minute wishes or demands for the mission/weather/settings?

I'll be on in about half an hour or so and probably hang around the public servers for a while. If you host, I'll check it out. Mission/weather/settings = training/easy? I'm only really able to operate the Su-25T and maybe basic flight with the P51-D but don't let that stop you from choosing a more interesting mission.
