Gaming Digital Combat Simulator Thread

The manual and training videos for the F-15C seem to be wrong. Pressing 2 does not put the HUD in LRS mode, it puts it in VISUAL mode. Pressing 6 *I think* puts it in LRS mode, but I'm not really certain. Also, Rctrl+I does nothing; I have no idea how to get into TWS mode.

They forgot to tell you that the F-15C is the one aircraft that got an overhaul just a couple of weeks ago. That may be a source of problems... I'll try to check it out. :P

... So many terms, acronyms, and key combinations to remember!

Tell me about it! I started with the Su-25T a few days ago and without a clickable cockpit it's challenging to remember everything on the keyboard.

I've also been in the A10-C since the summer sale started and it's fairly overwhelming (and impressive) at first glance. Fortunately I have an X52 which really helps with some of the HOTAS functions. The rest will come with practice and repetition I'm sure.

One thing I've been doing with keyboard commands is pausing the sim, going into the appropriate 'adjust controls' section and just pressing the keys I want to know about (or finding out what I've done by mistake). That should be the definitive answer to what keys do what. I've run into at least one command so far which was different in the sim to what was written in a document.

Very important information for anyone planning to make DCS purchases:

"We learned from Valve/Steam that they will be unable to continue merging DCS keys purchased outside of the Steam Store. As such and as of today, please note that any keys purchased outside of the Steam Store can no longer be used to activate DCS products on Steam.

We will be working with Steam to merge all keys purchased prior to today. We can make no promises as to when or if this will happen though… that is out of our hands.

Please note though that keys purchased on the Steam store will work on DCS World downloaded from the DCS Store."

That's not good. So much for having access to both Steam and DCS sale prices...

Interestingly, my A-10C key was finally able to be put into Steam. (it was bought non-Steam and well-prior to June 7)
So hopefully that means I won't have to worry about the 10 activation maximum anymore. It also makes install easier.

Also, while the DCS website summer sale was like last week, the Steam Summer Sale which just started yesterday includes significant discounts on DCS modules for anyone interested.

So, anybody interessted in a session tomorrow saturday at 1800 UTC?

Will have to pass. Will officially have lectures from 0945 to 2000, but I hope I can be home for the game Germany-Ghana before it starts.

1800 UTC should be what time it is right now. And I should be able to do that tomorrow.
Will set a reminder on my phone this time.

Will be there for ~30 minutes... until Germany-Ghana starts. I'll just stay on and jump in as spectator during the break.

Yup, this last lag was enough to kill my DCS. Don't know what it was, but it seem to be in relation with others that joined the server. Oddly, earlier other people could join the server without problems, but the last two created enormous lag. :-(

I believe players with high pings cause dreadful lag on DCS servers...

ADAPT, a pilot candidate selection process, used by one of the middle eastern airlines, seems to employ something familiar...

...they refer to it as a "simple computer game" (LOL) in the brochure, that you must fly accurately while doing an IQ test. Simple mental algebra, pattern matching, sequences, map exercises, and short term memory retention tests, while flying what appears to be the DCS A-10 on Hielor's setup! They could spice that challenge up by having a few Strellas thrown in for good measure (cue the Circus Theme tune).

Me lately on DCS? Not much time, but I did take advantage of the sale to acquire Combined Arms, at last. Great fun, reminds me of Microprose's old...
Spent too many hours on that years ago - chui, chui, BOOM!

Traded in my virtual flying boots for a pair of Gore-tex ICWT's (no worries, they are the only things I wear on my plates of meat out of work hours, anyway). Results...

Yeah! This is the stuff!

A-10 in the distance?

Aw! Better luck next time, mate!

So I've made it through the Su-25T training missions with a basic understanding of the aircraft. Turns out it wasn't as difficult as I thought initially but I'm still very much a rookie (as the various Su-25Ts embedded in the ground will tell). I might be just dangerous enough to attempt online flying without my usual crutches: labels and the pause button.

I have yet to try any combat sim online. To the guys who host/fly online: I have ok internet in Canada (up to 25Mbps down, 2.5Mbps up) - is that a potential lag issue for DCS? DCS hosted in Europe?

For communications, is Teamspeak the way to go?

I seemed to have a fantastic connection to Richy's server despite ~8Mbps down and ~1Mbps up.
I don't know what interaction with other player-controlled vehicles is like over the Internet, but I guess the interaction with AI is simple enough that there wasn't any apparent lag or imprecision. (except two lag spikes when some unknown people joined)

If you would like. We could try it again this saturday at 1800 UTC.

What about sunday at 0900 UTC? Would this be better time of day for you over in canada? :)

Not sure if I can take part in both times, since I lost a lot of time this weekend already for negotiating for a new car and still have to finish my article about the Java VM to sunday.

But should I have a minute for it on sunday, I will be there.

BTW: The Fw 190 D-9 Dora will now be available for pre-purchase and available on August 5 - any takers for a WW2 session in the second August week? I will have holidays by then. :)
