My desktop is really just a picture, I hide the icons, and hide the task bar. (so I can see the background picture better;))

May I ask what the picture is? If you like it so much that you hide the icons and the taskbar, then it must be good...

While working on a school project, my XP desktop used to look like this:

The screen shot of leopard you see above is actually linux's GNOME desktop environment.

I take it you use compiz.

I would, but it doesn't like running 3D apps, especially when using the desktop cube.

This is nothing special. Ubuntu 7.10, which comes with compiz installed by default. The widgets you see there are screenlets, and the dock is the Avant-Window-Manager. The only reason I am running compiz in the first place is because screenlets and AWN require it in order to support transparency. However compiz is running in the most basic settings. But I installed the advance configuration manager for compiz in order to better customize the effects to match with Mac OSX Leopard. They virtually look the same, and behave the same. Pretty cool if you don't want to spend hundreds of dollars on buying Apple hardware.

Looks absolutely gorgeous, and is fast as heck, and running on a crappy machine :
