5 1/2 (5.5 if you can't read an hybrid entire+fraction number) Solid Rocket Boosters!

Other observations:
- The Ares 5 2009 Edition has 6 RS 68B engines, your Ares 5 only has 5.
- The Ares 5 2009 Edition first stage tank is 10.17 m in diameter not 12.8 m (information given by MeshWizard)
- Check a little about the performance. I can put the EDS with Artemis (ESAS LSAM) in orbit without burning a drop of fuel of second stage!!! I had understood that the EDS burns roughly a 20% of its fuel for reaching orbit. With your performance Ares 5 will be the PERFECT OHSTO (One-and-a-Half Stage To Orbit) HOLY GRIAL (W-O-W!!!)
- I know that is a pre-pre-pre-pre-pre-pre-pre-preeeeeeeeee alpha release, but, if i were you, i take a little of care at modelling time. An IBM T60 with an Intel 945GML video card (a s**t of video card actually) easily manage 60 k-polygons meshes (i know this, because a use an IBM T60 with this video card for my developments). So, please, refine the model. Particulary the fairing looks a little chunky.
- Talkin' about the fairing... the fairing doesn't separate well. I'll put the image later.

I know what an SRB is. Do you mean 5 1/2 segments? How long is a segment? How many segments are my SRBs?
What would the 6-engine configuration look like?
Is the real one 10.17 meters or is my mesh 10.17 and I measured wrong?

---------- Post added at 04:20 AM ---------- Previous post was at 02:00 AM ----------

Speaking of the "Ares and Orion" add-on, i'm having trouble with it...
Whenever i load up a scenario with this add-on, the ships are not visible, but the F9 yellow boxes are still there....and the orion has no power, or fuel...
Any help?

Example:

While in Orbiter, minimize the simulation and check your Orbiter log without exiting Orbiter. Upload its contents.

BTW, if it seems like some of my posts are out of order or seem weird, it's because I had some loading trouble and couldn't see that new stuff was being posted and so I posted some stuff twice and posted something out of context.

AHA!!! Found the problem:

What would the 6-engine configuration look like?

Your answer was given by sf4ever with the YouTube embedded video.

Is the real one 10.17 meters or is my mesh 10.17 and I measured wrong?

Your mesh is 12.8 meters in diameter... the problem? The engines' skirt. The tankage diameter is correct.

So your saying that if I get rid of the engine skirt and add the 6th engine the first stage will be correct?

BTW, How long is a 5.5 segment SRB?

You're correct! :P

Selon this image taken form here:
index.php

The 5 1/2 segment SRB lenghts 192.5 ft or 58.67 meters.
Other info: look at the base of Ares 5: It shows the skirt and the diameter is the same of the stage. Some interesting images here :P

And a PDF with the Specs of RS 68 here :P

Good Luck :P

I have completed a new beta version of the Ares V addon I've been working on. It has the new first stage mesh and 5/2 segment SRBs.
Here it is:View attachment 3906

There is still a problem with the jettison of the fairings that I'm trying to fix. Also, the specs I got from Astronautix.com are definitely wrong. You can put the eds into orbit without using any of its fuel. Is there another good website for getting specs that I should look at?

Can you give exactly the page from Astronautix that you gathered the info? 'Cos the http://www.astronautix.com/lvs/ares.htm link has information very outdated. :(

EDIT: HERE i've found the data for the Ares 5 2008 Edition. There are the masses that i based for an estimated Ares 5 2009 empty masses:

For the 5 1/2 segment Reusable Solid Rocket Motors (or SRB) my estimate mass (assuming a 10% increase of the mass of a 5 segment SRB) is 110356 kg.

For the Core stage I asume it without dimensional changes, but, the correct mass is 134696 kg and when it separates from the EDS, there are 15630 kilos of fuel... wasted :(

The EDS Mass is of ~26 tons. And the fairing has a mass of 8800 kilos.

I'll test the Vehicle with these masses, and laterly i notify you how behaves this monster :P+}

EDIT 2: Yup: the empty masses was the problem. The test flight gave a so correct performance that i can't rearch orbit with a good ability :P Just like ESAS CaLV :P

1.2 * Your 5 engines thrust = :P

In case of normal RS 68 Engines, the thrust will be 6 * 272155.422 kgf = 1632932.532 kgf

Or, if we use the improved RS 68A engines, the thrust will increase to 6 * 317514.659 = 1905087.954 kgf

But the Ares 5 uses the RS 68B engines, and the data for them is very limited. So, if i was you, i'll asume the thrust for 6 RS 68A engines.

Kilogram-force. It's for avoiding me the complicated conversion from lbf (pounds-force) to Newtons :P Passing from Kgf to Newtons is as easy as passing from kg to ... Newtons :P

From N to Kg/Kgf: Divide the Magnitude in Kg/KgF per 9.81 (g at sea level)
From Kgf/Kg to N: Multiply the Magnitude in Newtons per 9.81 (g at sea level)

A rough approach could be done by moving the decimal dot to the left (conversion from N to Kg/Kgf) or to the right (Conversion from Kg/KgF to N).

Thanks again.

Actualy, I tried the thrust values (I converted them to Newtons by multiplying them by 9.81 (I think that's right).) I was able to put the eds into orbit with only the 1st stage and SRBs.
