So if you haven't heard there's a gigantic power outage in the Washington DC
metro area due to last night's crazy windy thunderstorms. I'm typing this in
from.my cellphone in a pizza joint 10 miles from my home because that's how far
I had to drive to find a restaurant. Sitting in my house while the temperature
rises to 99 degF and my food spoils was getting to me. So I think we need to start a
list of things to do when the power goes out/world ends/zombies come, etc.

- stare at the wall while humming a tune
- learn to play acoustic guitar while sweating profusely
- embrace the darkness
- be thankful you still have water; losing that is far worse than losing power

Oh, last time it happened to me, I started fiddling with the PIN code on my phone and locked that up. You should try it. Really entertaining.

-Conserve the battery on the phone
-Throw away or eat all the spoilables
-Keep the people stuck in the elevators company
-Make babies
-Use as an excuse to drive to the west coast/KSC/Canada.
-Find a roof and an umbrella, get free suntan
-Walk across the city, enjoying the chaos/people/scenery
-Make a solar powered/cranked air conditioner (guaranteed to be finished just when the power goes back on)

I had two power outages that lasted a few days last summer. I would just go out and ride my bike. However, that's probably not an option with these temperatures. I remember wishing I had a good book to read.

Since I can still get gas for my truck at least I can go places and charge my phone up.
I really did consider building some solar contraption, maybe a solar powered attic
fan, but in this heat doing anything is a chore. At least this pizza joint is air condidtioned.
So:

- drive until you find an air conditioned restaurant. Lounge around until they kick you out

Remove dust from guitar and play couple of tunes.

How can you sleep when the temperature is a humid 99 degrees?

How can I sleep? Well, I can sleep easy at humid 99 degrees. Lay down, close my eyes, and just let the mind go blank.
It may be hard for you, but not for me.

Okay, I just can't imagine sleeping comfortably at that temperature, and I'm from Georgia!

For my family, blackouts are much easier to deal with in the winter, since we have gas heat;)
But the summer...[insert "phew!" smiley here. Can we have a "phew!" smiley?]

Aren't we designed to maintain thermostasis in the conditions of a hot african savannah?

Imagine you're in a cave, open up the windows to imitate cave entrance, and sleep soundly.

I grew up in Ohio. :b
But it gets quite humid and hot in Ohio, mind you, especially when you're out camping all the time! :P

Besides, I don't think I've had a night sleep where I wasn't comfortable. It's when I wake up, when the discomfort begins.

You're quite right about that. Up here in SC It's been 102 in the day and 90-something at night. And my air conditioner overheats and burns up sockets, so I have to settle for a big-:censored: floor fan:)

I recommend sleeping under very light sheets and keep a tall glass of water by your bed;)

Assuming total blackout, I'd look at the stars.

This thread has made me realise that I'm never anywhere without streetlights, which is kinda sad as it makes everything have that cosy, but annoying yellow sodium glow. :(

After getting philosophical, and now assuming we're talking zombie apocalypse etc., I'd raid every supermarket in a 100 mile radius and swipe every lemon I could get my hands on, for three reasons:

1) Emergency power (maybe used in conjunction with onions?)

2) Avoid scurvy.
3) Use as antiseptic for zombie attacks.
