NASA is planning to decommission premier satellite missions that gather information on planet-warming pollution and other climate vital signs beginning as soon as October, sources inside and outside of the agency told CNN.

The destruction of the satellites — which will be abandoned and allowed to eventually burn up in a fiery descent into Earth’s atmosphere — marks the latest step by the Trump administration to scale back federal climate science.

Ignoring the politics as this isn't the basement, cutting funding for two perfectly working satellites and ordering their destruction strikes me as supremely dumb. Cut back on the science, okay but store the data at least or maybe even hibernate the satellites but destroying them? That's just being done out of spite.

And its futile: The rest of the world does not cancel their climate monitoring missions. Trump only kills the messenger, but not the message.

Trump doesn't work to make the lives of the US citizens better. He only closes the complaint desk and celebrates himself for it.

Multi-million dollar useless and humiliating faux pas, indeed.
