The NASA Z-2 Suit
tech_rockscropped.jpg

NASA's Z-2 Suit is the newest prototype in its next-generation spacesuit platform, the Z-series. As a follow-up to the previous Z-1 suit, which was named one of Time Magazine's Best Inventions of 2012, the Z-2 takes the next step in fidelity approaching a final flight-capable design. Most exciting, the Z-2 marks several milestones for NASA:

To the airlock. And beyond!

I must say I prefer the "classical" A7-L design :hmm:

I have to admit, the new suits look a lot cooler than the old ones.

These ones look more technologically advanced and more futuristic.

I also love the idea of actually being able to have the glowing parts different for purposes of identification.

Nice job NASA!

The Z-1 looks OK, pretty utilitarian. Space suits shouldn't be about looks; they are made so you can work on an alien surface somewhat comfortably without dying. Beat on it a bit and roll it around in the lunar regolith and it will look like a proper working suit.

The Z-2 looks to me like a spacesuit used as a prop in Lost in Space or Star Trek. Maybe it is the camera angle and the colors, but the Z-2 just looks cartoonish. The Z-2 photo actually looks like a scene from the original Star Trek - if he were holding a phaser and had a tricorder slung over his arm it would be perfect.
