A quick scan of Wikipedia reveals: In Germany this car is called a Opel Mokka... it was initially designed by Opel. Since I am a Wolfsburg guy, driving a Opel is unthinkable, so I never really cared but:

Yeah, if the US version looks the same inside, I can really really understand your problem with it. Which Linux developer created this user interface?

Hehe, Mokka means "for free" in Romanian slang .
I guess some people like that "tank" aspect to the inside of the car, with tons of buttons and big dashboard, leaving less for the actual windows and outside view.
Kinda nice design on the Golf dashboard, useful and minimalist. Also, gotta love the lower open space, which a lot of cars lack , unfortunately.
I used to drive an Opel Vectra B, which had two cupholders which sprang from that lower part of the dashboard. The gear stick would smack the left one when in 1st gear, and the right one when in 5th.

Edit: the car that Andy44 showed kinda reminds me of the Ford Kuga on the exterior, though I don't know if they have any other similarities.

To make matters worse, apparently even American cars now turn off the cigarette lighter socket when the ignition is off, so I can't charge my cellphone in the parking lot like I could with older cars.

The majority of them for the past ten years or so actually leave the lighter socket on, but it's commonly wired to the console module, which turns off all electrical features (dome lights, etc), typically 60 or 90 minutes after you get out of the car. It's basically a feature to help forgetful drivers keep from running their battery dead because they forgot to switch something off.

As far as the radio, in my '10 Focus (and actually in the '01 Oldsmobile Silhouette my ex and I had years ago), I can take the key out and sit & listen for 15 minutes or until one of the front doors opens. Again, meant to help folks keep from draining the battery I suppose.

Yeah, but you know that there's actually a combination of turning the volume knob while pressing five buttons at the same time that activates the secret radar speed-trap jammer...

They should have had it designed by SEGA, so there would be a combination that would allow unlimited fuel and the ability to drive through solid obstacles...

I bet most of today's models have some sort of codes that allow you acces to more advanced engine parameters and operation modes (eco, all out etc), from the dashboard console, without requiring that tester computer.

Quite many of those are actually included in the manual of my car, if somebody would ever read it.

I wonder how many actually read the manuals that are included with the products they buy. I always check the manual to make sure I understand at least the basics.

According to the manual, the handle on the passenger side A-frame is not officially referred to as the 'oh crap' handle.

Clearly you've never ridden in a car that my wife is driving. You'll both curse and pray in the same thought.

It make CryEngine3 beg for mercy.

Because of the complex graphics or myriad bugs? :P

For comparison... my new command bridge

I'm surprised to see English words on the made-in-Germany-for-Germans car ("air bag" etc.). Is that coincidence, or just normal?

Graphics. I can't run it on my laptop. Flat-out refuses to launch.

Re: cars: I drive a 1990 Honda Civic DX, 1.5l fuel injected. 253,000 miles on the odometer and still runs like new. Best part: unless it needs body work or machining work on the engine (probably another 100,000 miles and ten years down the line), I can do all the maintenance myself. Yeah, it's no Prius in terms of fuel efficiency, but 31 miles/gallon on a 25 year old car? Kinda hard to argue with. :)

Normal... the German term for air bag is "Air bag".

Also, many labels in the cockpit are simply English by European standards, like "Passenger Air Bag". Not sure about the function of the "Eject" button, I never dared to touch it yet.

Well, in a manner of technically speaking, you're sitting in a car. You're going to be taken for a ride pretty much no matter what.

Have you ever seen a car manual? I think it's faster and easier to read through Ulysses than through those.

Speaking of cars, yesterday I actually had my very first lesson at driving school. First time taking the wheel, litterally, and apparently, all those hours of playing Gran Turismo and racing in go karts played because the guy asked me if I really didn't take the wheel before. (Well I guess karts counts, but not soo much).

Overall, this is a great feeling, wheel's so sensible I never had to go past 90° even to make a pretty sharp turn. I didn't have control of the pedals (yet), but going in at 90 km/h while being behind a wheel is somewhat satisfying to me!

Well, I'm gonna look forward to take some more, and then hopefully soon be able to drive everywhere !

Can anyone recommend some good introductory level reading about the detailed inner workings of GPS and other satellite navigation systems, down to the signal design level? Unfortunately I am absolutely clueless about electrical engineering thingys..... (at least I know physics so.... :shifty:)

What?!
Obviously, it was done by aliens trying to communicate with us!
( :) )
