Humor Random Comments Thread

A few days ago I found a funny post of motivators Orbiter, and to not make a necropost (and later murdered at the hands of the Probe) I posting here the motivativator that I imagine today.

Orbiter Forum is very exciting

Congrats on RCT post #15000!!!!!!

What I imagined:

Me: I posted the comment number 15000. Is there a prize?
Admin: Of course here you USD1.250.000

"Major discovery" announced tomorrow

Do I need to be licensed to work as a bookmaker? If not I'll give you 1:1.2 for "media hype" and 1:50 for "He exists!"

Oh yeah, forgot about "Einstein was wrong", although whatever odds you give on that one people will continue to believe it. Dammit!

Tomorrow? More like in three hours. :P

Eris is smaller than Pluto

Alright, not reading the comment section of science articles for the next five years. Even if you find aliens or the Charon mass relay there: Pluto should have never been a planet.

Due to my limited understanding of physics I'll have to wait for the Urwumpe analysis anyway.

The background radiation is polarized, the polarization has to be caused by gravity waves, the new data is much different to the expected results assuming the lambda-CDM model, this is all so great and cool, that it must get a Nobel Prize and there is absolutely no alternative explanation for the polarization.

It is not that I doubt what was measured, I just think that the explanation goes into speculation. That the measured data is not even close to the predicted data, is a strong warning sign, that this explanation might be wrong, even if the data is right.

And did I mention that I am no astrophysicist? Ask somebody who is competent in that field.

Is it true that 70-80% of cars in France run on diesel? No wonder that smog in Paris is as worse as in Beijing (which is beyond horrific)!

No, it's just the French cars. :P

Actually, Diesels have a very bad reputation, as they are now some of the most fuel efficient and cleanest burning engines available.

Yes, but you should be aware that Diesel cars in Europe have to follow the similar emission standards as gasoline cars. The Euro 5 standard for fine dust is the same as for gasoline cars, 4.5 µg/m³. The Euro 1 norm was still at 180 µg/m³, in 1992. Actually, gasoline cars are much worse in Europe in some aspects of the pollution: While Diesel cars have limits on the number of particles, Gasoline cars don't (yet, they will in the Euro 6 standard), which is why modern direct injection gasoline cars produce 180 times more particles than diesel cars.

Also, in Paris, the problem is the plain number of cars in a small space, combined with a really bad weather situation. Thats why now only half of the cars are allowed to drive in Paris, depending on the last digit of the license plate.

(And for the record: Smoking a cigarette in-doors results in much higher fine dust pollution, than you have in car exhaust today)

Diesel is actually the more ecologic way to drive in europe: similar emissions, but less consumption than gasoline. Only actual gas is better (you know, as in, the gas that's actually gaseous, not liquid... why would anyone ever call a liquid supstance "gas" anyways??).

You mean either LPG (liquified petrol gas) or LNG (liquified natural gas).

And yes, its far more ecologic - you can actually get some really nice cars for a good price now, that combine Diesel and LNG.

I just looked at a fly under a microscope today.

...And now I know that nearly everything is significantly more horrifying under a microscope.

I have a quick question, and I didn't want to de-rail anyone else's thread for it...
The fan in my computer sometimes kicks into REALLY high gear. I'm pretty sure this is normal when there is a heavy load on the processor--but is it healthy for that to happen often? I mean, wouldn't it shorten the life of my hardware if it happens too much?

not so long ago I have seen under microscope swimming cells with tails!

... No, I didn't took any drugs that day.

The fan's doing his Job. Nothing about it going into high gear is unhealthy per se, rather it would be unhealthy if the temperature rises and it doesn't.

If it does it often and under unwarranted circumstances, however, it's usually due to fan clogging up, so it has to work harder to get rid of the same heat load. I have an HP pavilion, little nasty buggers way too powerful for their own good, so I know the phenomenon quite well.

So if the fan is always working to its fullest, or the computer even shuts down due to the temperature rising to high, a fan cleaning is in order. Piece of Cake in a desktop. Pain in the ass in a laptop, where it usually involves complete disassembly. Also, have some air in a can ready to clean the fan once it's out, and some thermal paste to reapply to the processor (after cleaning of the old one). If you clean it without that, you're just wasting your time.
