I've used it in older games quite often, where the key is to pause the game...

I usually used it to hold my system to read stuff on screen that was flashing by too fast. No other way to catch certain error messages...

It's useful for custom keybindings; easy to remember, and out of the way. I have a macro set to do something in orbiter that's important...full retro thrust, speedbrake, eject, landing gear, dispense donuts...one of those, if only I could remember....

Oh, it didn't need a keybinding. In days of yonder, this was a system key. Pressing it would halt the entire system in whatever it was doing, and so was a universal pause button. Wheather you wanted to pause a game or dos during boot-up to read the screen output.
