That's just... awesome. Why so big?!

You see the Laserdisc was aimed at a higher quality video, and with the optical and laser technology of the time, something like a blu-ray is still not feasible yet, so they basically increased the capacity by increasing the size of the medium. And yes, the way I remember it, it was better than VCDs when they did catch up, and they did only because they split the data into two CDs so that the quality didn't drop too much.

My uncle, who is an avid Beatles fan, has a complete collection of their vinyl, and sometimes still uses them, but to lessen the potential damages to his "treasure" he actually play the CDs a lot more often.

Struggling to find the word "vinyl", I think I quite offended my Dad by referring to them as: "Oh... you know... those um.... big floppy CD things..."

On a different note, Googling "Orbiter torrent" (trying to find the link on the MedPhys site, honest!) came up with half a dozen Pirat Bay links. I suppose I shouldn't be so shocked really; pity that's what torrents have come to be associated with, they're dead useful for big files.

My father had an extensive collection, played them once to record them to a reel-to-reel then sat on a shelf until his exwife took it all. =/ My collection is smaller, but I have poured a good amount of money into it and I do have some very rare items. They all get played, just very carefully, and the very valuable ones less so.

Also, if someone robs your uncle, it totally was not me. Nope.

I also enjoy vinyl for the unique pressings. Picture discs are neat. I also have a record with two grooves on each side, each groove is either an acoustic or electric version of the same song, and pressed into 8" clear vinyl. It's neat to put down the needle and be surprised by what version you get.

Vinyl records make nice throwing discs, kind of like frisbee.
That's how i wasted my grandmother's collection after she tossed the player off the table one night.
I've fixed the player later, but what's left were mostly the flexible skeleton records with loud western music, so the player was eventually broken up for spare parts.
