Cooling towers... on Mars?

If you were doing this on Mars, you wouldn't want to dump tons of water into the atmosphere. Second, flowing water on Mars occurs only rarely. Simulations and some loose evidence suggest that flowing water can occur, but would be rare. Your cooling towers wouldn't work the same way they do on Earth.

Also, you don't have any water sources to use...

The advantage you have on Mars is that it's freakin' cool there. With almost no atmosphere, you could exploit radiative cooling and keep your working fluid in a closed loop.

Those cooling towers need to be opened at the bottom for proper air flow. Also there is a basin of water under them for the condensate to collect.
Neat job though, but I'm not sure if a conventional hyperbolic cooling tower would "work right" on Mars...

My idea was to place radiators in the narrow part of the tower, and use the atmosphere as the coolant for the secondary loop. No way I am going to waste water on Mars. And the current meshes are just placeholders until I get a more detailed mesh completed. It's still a work in progress. All the details are still being laid out, such as the power lines, water well for keeping both the "hot" primary loop that cools the actual reactor and the "cold" secondary loop that actually turns to steam and turns turbines topped off, as well as supplying the water to the electrolysis plant. I have also way overpowered the plant for the base, since the base will still be expanding at the time the reactor goes live.

Why not try making a dry cooling tower, instead of a wet one?

Oh God what is this?

That's kinda the idea. Think of it as a huge nuclear-powered hairdryer, using hot water pipes instead of electrical elements.

Yes, but remember that you still need a huge gap at the bottom to let the air in, also, you can see in the photograph, that there are huge air guides below that help spreading the air flow evenly over the hot water tubes. Think of the big brother of your indoor radiator.

I realize this. The current towers are placeholders. I have a different one in the works as we speak.
Since this is turning into a :threadjacked: situation, I will move to a different thread.
EDIT: Take all further comments on my nuke station here.

Has anyone seen The Fountain?

It's a really good movie, and part of it takes place in outer space. The movie isn't really science fiction, though. Still, it's beautiful, and inspiring.

A car accident just happened right in front of my house! Probably two cars in a front end collision! I was just sitting down and I heard someone swerve, then a loud bang. I considered calling 911, but then I heard sheriff and fire sirens. I hope the people involved are okay...

Wow, I hope they are too, I wouldnt be surprised if one of them didnt have their headlights on while driving, or was drunk.

Here is a short video of the scene(dark).

The accident has been cleared now but I'm unsure of the victims. I certainly commend the sheriff, EMS, and fire crews for how efficiently they took care of the matter though.

Finally getting to installing FSX on my new laptop. Hopefully I'll be able to run it quite a bit better on this machine, setting everything to minimum settings isn't very fun to play with. :P
