So the culture snobs at the New York Times decided that grape salad is the "favorite" Thanksgiving dish in the state of Minnesota...which then prompted a giant online backlash against the Times, because almost nobody in Minnesota has ever heard of grape salad!

edit: When I first saw the Interstellar teaser trailer, it didn't excite me that much. But I appreciate it more now (because the music turned out to be from the actual soundtrack).

So there's a trailer for the new Star Wars out. I continue to be unimpressed.

Before the prequel trilogy any news of Star Wars movies made us all giddy with joy and anticipation.

Until we saw them.

Now we are all jaded and expecting the worst. Thanks, Lucas. And thanks, Disney, for picking my least favorite moviemaker to do this: Jar Jar Abrams.

I think the X-Wings flying NOE were kind of cool. Maybe would have looked better with the s foils closed, but then maybe they were rolling in weapons hot?

I noticed the 'Falcon had a new antenna, Lando broke the old one off so that was a bit of attention to detail that I liked.

I know the one thing I can count on is an abundance of lens flares, but it could always be worse. At least it was J.J. and not Michael Bay.

Something to keep in mind it the whole Star Wars story is not much different than an old dime novel, pulp fiction kind of story. No deep thinking involved. That being said, what's with the flares coming out of the light saber hilt? Wouldn't a person be as apt to lop their own wrist off? Poor design (just my humble opinion).

Random thought... If your blaster bolt can be deflected by a dude with a light saber, chances are you need a bigger blaster.

Or simply a laser shotgun that fires multiple bolts at the same time against a target. A light saber can't move faster than the speed of light...

Is Dreamworks Animation a subsidiary of Disney? Reason I ask, I took my daughter to see Penguins of Madagascar, and there were two subtle Star Wars references (and a TON of celebrity name-dropping. That part was sickening and every one was woven into bad puns).

One reference was the sound of the pod racer engines used as the engine sound for an aircraft, and another was when they were free-falling from one plane to another and the leader shouts "Stay on target!" in the same tone of voice as the trench run leader in Episode IV. Subtle, but there.

It was so bad I stopped to check that it wasnt just a fan-made production. Literally just a few poorly done CGI shots strung together. :facepalm:

I agree with Andy for once, Abrams makes the shallowest, most idiotic movies imaginable. I wish he would just go and crawl back into whatever hole he came out of.

Nah. X-Wings (and B-Wings ) look much more awesome with the foils open.

Of course, it makes them even more likely to bracket their targets rather than hitting them (a huge problem against TIEs if you play the X-Wing series), but it*looks* awesome. Did you notice, however, that these aren't *quite* stock XWs?

Other than that, as far as the trailer goes:

• The lightsaber is treacherous, but so was Darth Maul's.
• I see it rollin', and I hatin'.
• The trailer would have been much better, if after "December 2015", they had cut back to Episode IV. [whine]"But it's a whole 'nother year!"[/whine]

I can't believe I'm about to say this, but I think I might hate Abrams' movies even more than I hate Michael Bay's films...

Reason being when I go to see a Bay film I get exactly what I expect, a dumb plot, poor pacing, horrible science, and lots of silly explosions, usually mixed in with an insufferable sound track.

Abrams, however, is the King of Disappointment, he gets your hopes up and then crushes them under a pile of garbage. That Star Trek reboot was one of the worst movies I've ever seen, I'd rather watch Star Trek V again.

The new Star Wars trailer? That silly droid rolling around like a beach ball?

I personally enjoyed both the "real" Star Trek and the 2009 Abrams film.

Again, it feels as if I am not allowed to enjoy something if it is too "shallow"

A complaint I've seen about Abrams Trek was that it felt more like Star Wars than Trek. But now he is directing a Star Wars film.

Finally watched Alien, because of the game Alien: Isolation.
Still a great movie even in 2014. I was worried it would look too dated. The xenomorph has those jerky puppety hand movements, but it's still an impressive movie.
The video game is the game of the year for me. The graphics are great. The scenes, sounds, objects, computers, doors, everything are all dead-on recreations from the movies. It's astounding how much detail they went into. But the sound design is the best part of the game. The creaks and banging of the space station and its equipment, the growl of the xenomorph, the ambient and suspenseful music.
Despite the nice graphics, this game doesn't actually require very new hardware. I highly recommend buying this game if you can do horror. I forgot to mention, it's something like 15 hours of gameplay in the campaign! I believe it's still 25% off through Steam right now. (It was 50% off on the Humble Store the other day when I bought it, but that's over)
