I have a wood burning fireplace which I would love to use but on really cold nights it actually makes the house colder by faking out the thermostat into thinking the heater should stay off in the rest of the house.

Take a page from Jaime Hynemann and stick a air/water heat exchanger in the exhaust flue, and link it to a water heater tank and another air/water heat exchanger in your furnace duct.

Take the thermostat off the wall - you should see two or three wires on terminal blocks. Take a picture of how they are installed, then disconnect them, add extension wires, and hang the thermostat out a window.

Then make fire. And drink strong spirits.

Actually, you might want to start with the strong spirits, because with your thermostat on a night like tonight takes some courage.

I am rejecting anything that sounds like work, although I appreciate the craziness of taking critically important stuff apart when you need it the most.

The female techies I work with are right to think that all guys from the age of about 2 and up are basically addicted to doing stupid things and that it's a wonder any males actually live to adulthood.

And I concur, recalling the many stunts of my childhood which resulted in various outcomes such as broken bones, concussions, nearly burning the house down (more times than I've ever admitted to this day), shocking myself with electricity, shooting holes in the neighbor's door with a homemade bow and arrow (and various other homemade weapons) and leaping off of a moving freight terrain while dressed as Dracula.

At least put an ice pack on your thermostat so you can make a fire. Critical systems were meant to be hacked. This is good practice.

I have to dig up the paper, but some anthropologists have pointed out that in hunter/gatherer times it was energetically more favorable to the species that the males lived just long enough to breed, then died quickly so they didn't consume resources needed for the offspring. They point to various aspects of our physiology that make us slower, weaker, less prone to violence with age as a sort of a self-destruct mechanism, ensuring that old males would be beaten out and killed by the younger males.

This pretty much guaranteed that any males in the group would be young, immature, pumped up on testosterone, likely to attract a mate and then shortly afterward just as likely to get his brains beaten out by another male. Heck, this describes me and every guy I knew back in college on a given Friday night.

Another aspect of this is to understand that there is no model to describe how males should age naturally. Past 30-40 years, Mother Nature fully expects you to be dead, so there really is no sense of what an elder male should look like naturally. The fact that we live at all past this age is a recent hack, so everything you do with yourself to keep yourself healthy and feeling good past that age is also a hack.
