Hi,

I am having trouble converting Quicktime (.MOV) files to WMV for use in Windows Movie Maker. Can you recommend any converters or alternative editing programs for free?

Thanks.

There is a free program I have used to convert (recompress) movies (and do simple editing like cropping, change of aspect ratio, etc): XMedia Recode.

It should work with both MOV and WMV formats.

I use Pazera to convert .flv to .avi files (flvtoavi), and .mp4 to .avi files (mp4toavi); the programs work well. Then I use WM Converter to convert them to WMV or MP3 files. Can WMM handle .avi files, though?
In your case, you'd convert .mov to .avi to .wmv. But orb's seems more straightforward.

I've used both VLC and Windows Media Encoder with ffdshow before. Generally successful but results vary depending on the codec used inside the QuickTime container.

Magic Video Converter, I use it for all my media conversion needs.

I can convert from and to; AVI, MPEG, MPEG 1, MPEG 2, MPEG 4, VCD, DVD, SVCD, RMVB, RM, WMV, MOV, DIVX, SWF, MP2, MP3, MP4 and other video formats I can't remember.

Another thing I love about it is how simple and to the point the interface is. You can just open it, select a file to convert, select what to convert it to, and click GO. And of course if you want to, you can get in to the detailed settings of each conversion.

I guess you can also take a look at some app called Tunebite, it's not free but I say it'll come in handy for converting all sorts of audio and video files and recording streaming videos.

Anyways, as far as I recall this one also works to convert mov to wmv, avi, mp4 and so on. Might be helpful.
