Lambda-4S - the first orbital launcher of Japan. With the successful launch of the Ōsumi satellite on February 11, 1970 (on the fifth attempt), Japan became the fourth spacefaring country in the world (following the Soviet Union, the United States and France), and the first Asian country possessing orbital launch capability (if we do not count the USSR). Thus, Japan managed to barely overtake its regional rival China, whose Long March 1 had crashed on November 16, 1969 after just 69 seconds of flight, thereby commencing the Asian Space Race.
