Well, now that we know how a 7 yr old forum dies.(M6)..that is to say without any warning from the forum owner that they are having difficulties and here is your data to backup.....How are we going to keep this from happening to Orbit Hangar Mods?

I believe that Vash hosts Orbit Hangar Mods on his on personal server and regulary backs everything up.

Somebody more familiar with Orbit Hangar Mods internal operation could maybe answer this question better than me.

WE as a community do nothing. Vash hosts the site from the goodness of his heart, it is the biggest online repository for orbiter add-ons, if it goes down, that will be a disaster, but he is in no way obligated to keep it open. :) BTW you can host add-ons here as well.

A big time thank you, i wonder if he actually plays the add-ons that is put on his site, it would be pretty weird if he didnt that will like be having conol sanders not eating his chicken.

I am probably going to upload mine to here too jus like computerex.

The Orbit Hangar Mods web site is professionally hosted on a dedicated server at a large hosting company. The 3 years that I've been with them, I've always had good service and I've had no hardware trouble with the server. That being said, of course I don't just let the site run its self and pray that the server will never crash and loose all of its data. Remote FTP backups are run of the entire site once per week and the database is backed up daily.

That being said, I have no plans of ever closing down the site. In the event that I do close the site some day, I will make the current database and all add-ons and images available to someone else to host if they wish. But again, I really can't foresee any reason for that to happen.

Thank you all for your continued support of the site.

P.S. I am working on a new layout for the web site. More information can be found in this topic: http://orbiter-forum.com/showthread.php?t=920

I have said it several times, but it always bears repeating: Orbit Hangar is a vital part of the Orbiter community and Vash is a prince beyond compare!

As for backing up Orbit Hangar, is it really possible that addon developers don't keep copies of their own work? I would hope that most of the addon files could be restored in a matter of days from the author's own backups. In any case, it sounds like Vash has it all well in hand.

THANKS!

Usonian,

The problem with relying on add-on developers to re-upload all of their own work is that many of them simply are not around any more to do so. There are a number of great add-ons hosted on the site (granted that most of them are very old now) whose authors just simply aren't around any more. That and the fact that it would require a lot of effort for some people to re-upload their entire collection. It would just be a bit impractical and I'd be letting everyone down on what the site exists for.

Is orbit hangar down?

No...
Why do you ask anyway?

EDIT: Just saw your other Topic. It is working fine for me.

But it is the greatest addon, so I don't know if it depends on its number of addons / distance or signal between you are browsing and Orbit Hangar Mods.

I browse it for the first time on Dec. 2007.

But, not only 10 seconds, browsed.
