Is it just me but might be time to rethink the Aries 1 rocket
Having work at NASA during the Constellation Project where the Aries 5 upper stage would do the TLI burn and then the Altair Lander to do the LOI burn it looks like we need to look at that again.
With the Moonship doing both the TLI and LOI burns and Orion the only manned craft to get home why launch Orion on a 4.5 billion dollar SLS ? Seems like a smarter thing would be to bring back the Aries 1 rocket because the upper stage was to be based on the Centaur 5.
Yes NASA stalled by saying the engine would take 8 + years to build when the Centaur RL 10 was in use then when they were called out about that fact NASA pulled the pug as they said well if the SRB blew up the burning fuel would destroy the Orion chutes so if an SLS blew up no issue with that ?. Well those guys are all retired on Fisher Island drawing their fat Gov pensions telling them selves job well done.
"No bucks, no Buck Rodgers" this might be a way to push Artemis out into phase 2 "Moon Base" . But Hopper and Moon cars sound fun but Artemis with end after we land on the Moon with either Artemis 4 or 5 ith we don't find a cheaper way that the SLS. Maybe Areis 1 is the answer and it might need a stretched Centaur 5
