Was send in 2009? What a powerful signal that it causes such a massive time dilation in eastern Europe.

An interstellar signal was sent on October 9, 2008 towards the star Gliese 581...
Now the aliens which live at Gliese 581 know where we are and will send their attack ships...:P
NO, I am just joking... Its a great idea to SEND signals in constrast to just LISTEN and searching to find them...it is a more active way to get in contact rather than passive just sit and wait..
By the way: how long will the signals take to that star to arrive there? Is there a possibility to get an answer from there within the next 30 years (before I am dead?)

Also, the message was very likely 50-60% spam, like all communication leaving Russia. In the worst case, you will in 40 years receive a bank order from Gliese 581.

This time, you are free to blame Ukraine. It must have been some electoral campaign spam.

Oh, my fault... so instead of "Viagra without prescription", the aliens will complain "what the *garble* is Timochenko?"

You joke, but it may be true. Go to the Atomic Rocket Homepage and do a search on "relativistic rockets" to see what could happen to you if you're the second species in the local space neighborhood to develop interstellar space travel. Bottom line: you lose.

So I whould be about 57 years-old when we get a response. It will probably be: "E-mail address is not valid."

Not entirely true, because the first ones to develop interstellar space travel will have to worry about the fact that they might be the second ones. If some alien civilization wipes us out with relativistic missiles, they have to worry about what might happen if some race they don't know about also has relativistic missiles, because an attack both exposes the second race and reveals to the third race that the second is paranoid to the point of hostility, and thus might be good to get rid of. And of course, the third race has to worry about a fourth, and the fourth about a fifth, and so on.

Also quoted on Atomic Rocket:
"To extend the Central Park analogy, the muzzle flash when you fire off your gun reveals your position and identifies that you are hostile to anyone else out there."

My Space Message

To everyone who is really interested in this...
I have gone to the website of the scientists from the METI (Messaging to Extra Terrestrial Intelligence) group founded by Alexander Zaitsev from Russian Academy of Science.
http://www.cplire.ru/html/ra&sr/irm/[email protected]
There I found a link to Demo versions of special software for composition of four-color digital Messages, which were made by Erick Dickelman, is available at his "Interstellar Messaging" Central to the addresses:
http://www.seti.housenet.org/test
There you will find the new test apps: [ENCODE] and [DECODE].
I made a message with the encode tab and here is my message which you can copy and paste into the decode tab.
Message:
0000111000000110001100010000000101001000100110000000001101000001011010000010110011111001010000000100011000110000001110000

When you paste this there and press "decode" you will see my message !

(edited later: hmm does not work this way, all the "0" and "1" I posted in one string and it still show up all 0 and 1´s all together but the forum post does make a "space" between some of them...in my post post all numbers are together with no space in between, but the forum makes spaces between them...maybe because they do not allow such long "words" ? Do make it work you have to delete the "space" between the numbers before pressing the DECODE button. Sorry I thought it will work easy, but some reason this forum does not allow long words like this...maybe someone have still the nerv to see my "message"...? )

That was a fast reply for an interstellar message....

And the winner is: stjimmy225 !!!:cheers:
You got the first prize for beeing the fastest mystery message decoder of the world ! :sos:
And: oh yes, you got it, I did not realized the "Clean up Input" button there will remove theses "spaces"...
Ok for all others who want to try this I made a new one:

0000111100000000131131003300011111100330000122100020100011100001001000100011200012222211020000023200000000002220000000000222000000000010100000000003030000000023303320000

Just copy and paste like discriped before and press "Clean up Input" before "Decode"....have fun

True, I guess it all depends on how paranoid you are, or think you need to be, or think the Other might be.

I kind of like the idea of developing interstellar travel first before announcing to everyone that we are here. This way we can be paranoid enough to hedge our bets but not so paranoid that we never leave home.

In the end, though, it may not matter, because we are already at the point where pretty soon we will be able to detect possible earth-like planets around nearby stars, and must assume others will be able to do the same when looking at Sol.

For years I always thought that we couldn't hide, anyway, because of all our radio signals we broadcast every day since the turn of the 20th Century, but I don't think that's true anymore, since the power levels of most of these signals will quickly drop to the level of the background radiation and get very lost within a few light years. But purposely firing a high-powered directional signal at a nearby star guarantees that the signal will be strong enough to be detected at the other end by anyone who may be listening.

A documentary movie named Calling E.T. will premier at the International Documentary Film Festival in Amsterdam, on November 25, 2008.

Filming took place in USA, Western Europe, South Africa and Russia.

The website of the movie incorporates a viewable trailer (click the "traler" link to view one):
