I recall there were quite involved discussions on Apollo landing site selection, but could not find ground rules on-line. Does anyone have a link handy for site selection criteria for manned and unmanned flights to Moon and the planets?
Off the cuff, I can think of:
a) the slope plus area criterion (a level spot not less that XX square meters)
b) Line-of-sight comms with mission control
c) absence of boulders
d) lighting (Sun angle not too large/not too low) to have some extra time in reserve and to be aided by shadows during landing.
Anything else? (The selection of site in Mars refmissions docs was not explained enough AFAIR)
