Hardware HDTV or not to be

I'm looking to purchase an HDTV to sim with via HDMI on my laptop (msi gx720). I'm wondering if anyone has had any experience with one ranging in size from 32" to 40" as a monitor for Orbiter. If so could you please refer to it by model and manufacturer. Any advice would be priceless.:thumbup:

The huuuuge problem with using TVs is that not all of them support a 1:1 pixel mapping which leads to text being especially worthless. Another side effect is that you often don't see the full image or have borders around the image.
Apart from people reporting in, your best bet would be to go to a store and ask if you can try them out. Bring Aspirin...

i recommend LG - the 42 inch one i have in my living room has a perfect compatibility with PC input (it even has the RGB jack)....

it's worth reading through the manual and taking your time with the menus and setup thingies.... there's a setting for which resolutions it accepts and all... makes all the difference :hmm:

Thanks for the heads up on big screens.

I went to Best Buy last night and chickened out, leaving the store empty handed. I didn't feel like I had enough information. I don't trust salesmen.

I like LG. I have a 23" for my kid's (extended family) computer. My goal is to buy a really good screen to use with this laptop while I piece together a new Desktop.

Next time I'll take the laptop with me, and try it out first.

I settled on a 32" 1080 LCDTV LG 32lk450. Used the laptop in store to check it out first. The salesmen were lousy. They even made me buy a 6 ft hdmi cable before hand. I ended up exchanging it for a 10' before I left. I'm stoked on the tv though. I'll add a screenshot once Im happy with the color, gamma, contrast and brightness adjusted well. Thanks again for responding guys.

Here' the screenies, It will probably take me more than 15 minutes to configure xorg.conf
I read that you took a resolution hit with hdmi. I am able to get ~145fps with hdmi at 1920x1080, but I still prefer rgb for
the overall picture quality. This is going to affect not just my Orbiter experience, but my add-on development as well.
I'm kind of excited, I'll grab another beer.

Xorg was problematic to configure the rgb connection, but hdmi provided 1920x1080x24 Twinview in minutes with nvidia-settings.

This makes Orbiter even that much more awesome. Thankyou Moach and TSpenguin...

1080 is pretty low resolution for a monitor. If you are using it for simming (and are thus sat fairly close to it) you'll be massively disappointed at the low resolution. You'd be much better off getting a smaller-but-high-res monitor than a massive 1080 one.

It is all about the right distance. the 32" allows to be further away which is a little easier on the eyes. And we all know how long those spaceflights get

Besides, I think he also wants to watch movies/TV on it.

I'm really happy given I paid $399 + tax. 1920x1080x32 is plenty for my tastes at this point in time.

I'm just glad to have something big again. My last monitor was a honking NEC 21 in crt that weighed a ton and took up the whole desk. At ewaste I could still get one for $20, but I couldn't carry it because of my back. Thanks for all the comments. :tiphat:

PS I just noticed this screenshot is in 16 bit, it looks better in 32 bit.
