An earthquake in Haiti has killed somewhere between 30,000 to 1000,000 people on January 12, 2010. Both civilian and government structures were pummeled in the wake of the earthquake. This earthquake went 8.1 miles underneath the ground, had 42 aftershocks, a magnitude of 7.0, and had an intensity of MM X. Even the Haitian's religious shaman, Joseph Serge Miot, was killed in the horrific earthquake. The Haitian ambassador to the United States, Raymond Joseph, has asked the United States of America to offer aid in this crisis. Several other Haitian diplomats have done the same in other countries. It is my personal belief that it will take Haiti quite some time to recover from this, and their infrastructure may remain in ruins years after this travesty. If you have family or friends in Haiti, you have our support in trying to find them. If you are from Haiti, feel free to share your thoughts on the earthquake. They are all in our thoughts, so good luck, Haitians.

The only communications coming out of Haiti right now are sat comms. It really is bad, and things are likely to get worse in the coming days as supplies run out and diseases break out.

Haiti got destroyed. Again.

The following link contains some interesting post-earthquake imagery of Port-au-Prince from Google Earth.
I observe how the sports stadium seems to have been turned into some kind of operational/medical center (as is usual in most cases like this).

It's heartbreaking, of all places, Haiti... The Puerto Rico government is colecting supplies to send over there..

Thanks for the link Orbinaut Pete.

It is a horrible disaster. 7.0 is quite strong, isn't it? Looks like port au prince will never be the same again.

But I'm glad this was not a meteorological event. Because people would think this is another evidence for a unusual climate change. Of course man-made. In fact it is a example how mighty natural forces are compared to humans.

This is nearly the worst case scenario possible.

A densely populated third world country.
A strong shallow quake nearly under their largest city
Poorly constructed buildings with basically no earthquake proofing.
Practically nonexistent rescue services.

No, instead, just people people claiming that not liking AGW is better than having actual evidence, there are also people who see the bigger picture on Haiti...

The dead are not even buried yet, and the trolls already come out of their caves, devouring them for their agendas...

You spoke too soon. Wackjob Danny Glover blames this on global warming:

I want to puke when people say its a punishment from god... . :WTF:

How well I know them. It was almost as foreseeable as the bank of England until some people would start to think that there must be something odd here beside the special cold winter in Europe and a jet stream too far south. And what does fit better to the picture than global warming? Even if it is an earthquake. Obviously humans always need to blame oneself. Why do so many people actually believe in sin? Why not just accept that there are natural forces we can not do anything against it. Yes it is horrible and might become the most horrible event of the year 2010. If you see the pictures of Haiti you start to think you see a motion picture showing a nuke war. When I saw the first pictures I was having breakfast and the sandwich got stuck in my throat honestly. But Haiti sadly is above a subduction zone. And Haiti really is a poor region. All we can do is to help or donate. But we can not prevent such events to happen.

How could global warming possibly affect earthquakes?

I would not be surprised if there even was something like a IPEC, intergovernmental panel on earthquake change, to look how man-made effects to tectonics change could be minimized by 2.0 Richter magnitude scale. Maybe a jump or walk tax or such some thing.

The scary thing is the lack of fresh water. After 3 or 4 days people will start duing of dehydration without it.

That is not the problem. Drinking water where corpses decompose in is far worse. You can die of dehydration by not drinking, or you can die of dehydration because of cholera. There are many better ways to leave the world.
