Future Russian ISS modules get names

Roscosmos have just sent their proposal to Energia Corp. to name the future Russian ISS modules the following way:

• MRM2 - Поиск - [Po`eesk] - means Search
• MRM1 - Развитие - [Razvi`tiyeh] - means Development
• MLM - Перспектива - [Perspektee`vah] - means Prospect, Promise

Imagine an astronaut who is not a native Russian speaker, trying to quickly say this in an emergency:

Yuri, there's a fire in the Perspektee`vah! Quickly, head through Zarya and go get Sasha from the Razvi`tiyeh. On the way back, grab our Sokol suits from the Po`eesk, then head to the Soyuz at the aft of Zvezda and get ready for an emergency undocking!

But seriously, they are very nice names. Unlike the ones we have over here, like C.O.L.B.E.R.T. By the way, I learned how to say this from the cosmonauts!

I can only say to this that in such a situation one might expect extensive use of Russian foul language, which includes words clear and brief enough to be used in emergencies and generally in every heated situation. :rofl:

I think if written in International Phonetic Alphabet (IPA) the transcripted names would look less complicated

I recently read a book, which featured a first-hand account of the fire on Mir - there was lots of Russian foul language in there!

• Svet, «Свет»: Light
• Voskhod, «Восход»: Dawn
• Avrora, «Аврора»: Aurora

Svet and Voskhod would be too high sounding names for the little utility modules MRM-2 and MRM-1 are. Avrora, on the other hand, would a bit politically coloured. In Russian, the first meaning of it is the name of the cruiser whose cannon shot was a starting signal for the October Revolution. The second meaning is the name of Roman goddess.

But doesnt all ISS members have extensive knowledge of Russian and vice versa. I like the names too, but Voskhod has already been taken.

Doubt that. We just don't have as many spacecrafts as features on other planets and asteroids - and still the newly discovered ones get named.

•МИМ-2/MIM-2/MRM-2 - Поиск/Poisk/Search
•МИМ-1/MIM-1/MRM-1 - Рассвет/Rassvet/Dawn
•МЛМ/MLM/MLM - Наука/Nauka/Science
