Found the following picture recently, and got confused. Apparently, it's a launch from the Cape, but then, what is the second flame on the left?
It can't be a reflection, and i never heared about double launches.

Anyone recognize which launch it is, btw?

It is a reflection. And it is a lately space Shuttle launch, the F-22 is pretty new and the launch pad is LC-39A

F-22 from Homestead AFB cover launches, they are not chase they are deemed "escorts" such as the F-16's that cover mission control during all missions. During a mission you can look outside to see at least a pair of "escorts" flying cover around there.

I just learned that from going to the NASA tour.

Well, here's my guess, and I do emphasize guess. It's apparent this was taken from within an aircraft. Maybe it's a reflection/glare from the window of the aircraft? Kind of like a lens flare effect...

Not sure otherwise...

**EDIT** It's possible this shot was photoshopped to imply the US had the ability to launch several shuttles succesfully at the same time without failure....

A Google search found this:

f22.jpg

This shot seems to be a cropped version of a hires version of the one you posted. The F22 appears to be in the exact same position. One of these images appears to (for some reason) have been edited. Couldn't find out what launch this is, however.

Pete, I did not see your post while editing mine, I swear! I was apparently editing while you were posting LOL

The second one appears to be a more zoomed version of the first, the shuttle is definitely higher off the ground. Perhaps about a 1-2 second break, and a much higher zoom.

It's the same picture- just cropped. Compare the position of the F22 to ground reference objects. The 'zoom' is the same. The picture has been cropped from a higher res one.

Maybe when they cropped it they also shopped out the extra flame. I'm guessing it was just a lens flare or reflection anyway.
