No idea, but I know my speed!
Greetings!

Does anybody know of any good books concerning classical field theory (Lagrangian formalism etc)? Not on any particular theory in particular (electromagnetism), just in general.

...yep that's about all I've got to say, thanks in advance!

Hmm. I've got sort-of acquainted with that from all kinds of bits and pieces everywhere, so I can't recommend something from personal use.

However, if you go to Amazon and search for "Classical Field Theory", there's no end of books on the subject, and some of them are reasonably priced. Based on previous experience with their books on Topology, I'd recommend Dover Classics. Yes, they usually reprint older, introductory courses. That's just what you need imo.

Cheers!

My favourite book in this area is an oldy but a goody: Classical Mechanics by Herbert Goldstein. It's a comprehensive graduate-level text on the Lagrangian and Hamiltonian formulations of classical physics, starting with the descrete case and, later in the book, generalising to the continuum case (ie classical field theory).
