Will some of those screens be like the Discovery from 2001: A Space Odyssey, which had some screens being one-color backgrounds with random three letters on them?

I had that in mind also but I must test, the result might look crappy. (maybe with soft background color ?)

I dont like saying this but do you have an estimate on when this will be released to the public?

Well shortly for a public beta if I can get ride of the dozen of image to do. Much more longer if I should do all them myself.

Specifically what graphics you need as of right now?

We should have a contest to get the images rolling in..

Yep, the 2,5,6 are usable with some text (that I can do so there is font consistance) , the 1 2 and 3 are unrelated. (Too artistic, the 1 for example cannot be related to magnetic field information or anything like that)

Maybe I can start a specificall thread ?

Dan

I finished "ScrLanded.dds" (generic) and "ScrLanded_Earth.dds" I must say again IT REALLY ROCK !!!! (I changed the first part of filename because they where to long for DX9 client that bugged)

Just one new idea:

The rightest screen of the three will also be dedicated to some system display, mean when you retract or deploy gear, open door, start wheel, hover, a specific "status screen" will appear. (and be replaced after a while in automatic by the next "ambiance screen")

Yes start a thread! Make the first post a list of what you need.
1- Moons
2- Planets
3- Technical Status screens
4- Instrumentation
5- Machinery
6- and so on and so forth..

Tell people to post them like this:
256x170 lossless BMP file

View attachment bug-nebula.bmp View attachment hf_kepler_spacecraft_01.bmp
View attachment Horsehead-Nebula.bmp View attachment PIA10094.bmp

Comment on the ones you like and the ones you dislike, and soon enough you'll get exactly what you need. Tell them it's a chance to show off their work in a bonafide Orbiter add-on. I know I can't wait to see one or two of these in the Arrow!

This reminds me of a previous post by boyan3001, who asked about a kind of template, or something to standardize the graphics, and to me it sounds like a good idea.

...Maybe I can start a specificall thread ?...
Yes, definitely.

Are these any good? I'm no graphic designer.

I won't presume to speak for Dan, but I think that's the right idea.
They should be captured and saved in BMP format. Jpeg is lossy, and we're already working with low enough resolution as it is. But these look good.

I think Dan wants to have room for text, so the planetary body needs to be offset from center, perhaps to the left or right. So there's a place to put text.

Wait till he responds.

Some screens that I've found:

This really does rock!!

So, generic or illegible 'status' screens would be out of the question for deep-space ambient screens?

I think he wants partly illegible screens, or ones that have room for his own text.
Well in any case, pile'em on in! and give him some ideas!

Perhaps this is a good resource -- http://www.jpl.nasa.gov/spaceimages/

Why not some "famous" nebulae then, like [ame="http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Pillars_of_Creation"]Pillars of Creation - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia[/ame], for example?

I think opening another thread is the best thing, because it's taking a lot of posts and so this thread will remain clean.
I also find this a secondary/less important feature compared to other stuff you could develop in a mother ship, but that's just me.

One must not underestimate ambiance things. Simulator is all about the feeling of "being there". Approaching a planet after billion miles and having somes pics and the ships's system that (seem to) aknowledge your trip is very rewarding.

Also it's a win/win trade : great add for a very low coding time (took me 4 hours). Somes others systems in contrary could take weeks to do for a medium or even poor gaming result.

For example a complete power managment often just resume in "press a-b-c-watch gauge-go", 5mn in simulation but a hell of coding if you want it realistic. (Must really power systems by various circuits)

I'll open a new thread for screen right now.

Dan

I appreciate your work, Dan. Your DGIV and Arrow are probably my most used add ons.

I can't wait to download your latest updates.

Just a thought dan you might want to make sure those submitting stuff for those screens are using work that is public domain or under the proper license. I have seen folks time and time again just yank copyrighted images and claim its their own work.
