Search Ares V

There are some pretty good quality concept pictures of it on wikipedia. I'll try to work on some of the textures for you, though not immediately, I need to install PS onto this computer, since I only had it on my old one, before it died.

I'm loving this ship more and more, Columbia! Well done! Glad I could help you out at least a little. Gives me inspiration to maybe try my hand designing something of my own ...

I quite agree. This is my first collaboration of this sort, and it's been great to bat ideas/suggestions back and forth.

Perhaps I can get off my tail, get my "honey-do" list up to date, and get to work on some ideas I've got?

I just launched Francisdrake's Ares I and docked with the EDS just fine, no CTD. Albeit this isn't with your modified lunar mission scenario. This was the Ares V launch, with the the Ares I added to it.

Weird, maybe it's just something busted in Columbia's supplied AresI/V Lunar mission. I can't see what though... Then again, I've been tweaking things in that particular install of Orbiter alot recently, so maybe I corrupted something along the lines. Ah well, I kinda prefer a multistage version of the I anyway, so I can tinker with drafting some new guidance files.

Pablo, be sure to check out the posts from the last few weeks. There's been some changes to the configs and such. I'm not sure if Columbia has updated the most recent zip.

Hey Phantom, any luck getting her to piroutte any quicker?

Yeah, I've been reading along with this thread, I just haven't said anything until now. So I made the needed changes to my Ares V.

Also, I actually started working on updating the textures tonight. Almost done with the second stage. EDIT: Whoops, I was doing an Ares I texture by mistake. I didn't see the Ares V folder :P More edit: Hm, I didn't realize that you didn't actually texture much of anything on this. If I can get the original meshes from you (Since I don't know how to convert msh back to a usable format) I'll be happy to map and texture some things for you.

Sure, Pablo. What file format do you want them in?

So, this is annoying. I'm getting that CTD right around docking again. Missing meshes according to the log. The ONLY thing I see that's different now from yesterday is that I'm docking on the dark side of earth, but I fail to see how that would matter much.

Is there a scanning program available to check for missing files or errors in path naming? Something is up here, but it seems like I'm the only one so I have to assume I made a typo in one of the configs or scenarios and its fouling out the system somewhere late in the sim run.

Nope, that was all I had planned on doing, since your SRBs look fine. I already edited the fairing texture a tiny bit with higher quality logos. Thanks.

EDIT: Can I get the interstage between the Core stage and the EDS? It was part of the same mesh for the core stage in the last beta, so I assumed they were together in this one. I'll need that please.

Oh, okay. I was wondering why the engines and engine skirt were different. I just finished texturing that mesh too. :P But I can just copy over those textures, so it's all good. Thanks.

Well, I've been fighting off something that resembles the flu, but I got around to messing with the guidance file again. With disasterous results...
You can use the spin(xx) command to begin the turn as soon as the hypothetical clamps release the ship from the pad, but the pitch commands wouldn't work properly, she just went straight up...
I tried the attitude commands to get me where I wanted, and that's when things went badly... It can probably be done, but what we have now is just so much easier (and not that far off the mark anyway).

I doubt I'll tinker with it much more. (Ok, probably a little since I can't leave well enough alone!) But between Phantom getting her to spin at all, and me helping getting her on a decent flight path, I think we're in pretty good shape.

Columbia, when you get a moment, would you mind walking me through how exactly you set up your first scenario for the stack? I realize that I can just cut and paste it into a fresh scenario, but I've been tinkering with getting the stack assessible in Scenario Editor and have been having issues wrapping my brain around it. I think my CTD issues may have been stemming from something in your Lunar Mission itself, because if I cut and paste everything to some other scenario, it seems to run just fine and dandy.

Anyhow, I'd really like to know how one takes a scattering of freshly textured parts, most of them spacecraft3's, and actually assembles them into a working ship.

Well first of all you can't create a multistage2 spacecraft with scenario editor. As for how to set up a scenario with a multistage2 in it, I suggest you read the documentation that comes with the multistage2 module. And what do you mean about turning a scattering of spacecraft3s into a working spacecraft? If you want to learn how to make a multistage2, read the documentation I mentioned earlier.

I just want to make sure you approve of this before I go further. Basically done with the core stage, though I just need to add a texture to the exposed inner tank. Then I just have a few minor touches for the EDS.

(I made the main tank slightly darker since this screencap.)

They are a little darker now. I had them with a ribbed engine look, like the SSME or the F-1. I just found a good image of an RS-68 though, so I'm about to update those. They'll end up silver and black. Besides that I finished the Core and EDS. And I'll package them up for you shortly.

Also, is this Ares V mesh slightly large? I didn't notice until I had the EDS and the core next to each other to compare the colors, and the core looks a little too large. Will you be able to scale that when I give it back to you or will I need to retexture a properly sized one?
