Hey guys, i had an idea, you know all those fun runs to raise awarness of cancer or something could we do a flight around the world in orbiter to promote orbiter, or this forum, or anything else. Anyone can join, you can use any aircraft from orbiter hangar, it wont be a sub-orbital flight. Any opinions about this?
I think it could be fun:P

Why would you perform an (extremely boring) purely atmospheric flight to promote a program that is a space flight simulator?

3 things, how is it boring, if you find it boring that shows everyone that your not commited, orbiter is not just a space flight sim what do you think Kev33 is doing.

Because half of what you'll be flying over is water? Because even when you're flying over land, at atmospheric altitudes you'd be seeing blurry blobs? Because if you did it in real-time it would take a very long time?

How does it show that I'm not committed?

Orbiter is primarily a space flight sim, and its atmospheric flight model, although nice, isn't the best. Kev33's models are awesome visually for the most part, but from what I've seen the handling characteristics aren't very realistic.

If you want to show off Orbiter, take a trip to a moon of saturn/jupiter and back. You'll get a lot cooler pictures that way too.

There ya go.

To whom should I promote this? to imaginary people who lives on Earth simulated by orbiter?
But unlike Hielor, I'm fine with flying planes in orbiter. Aircrafts feel *exotic* there, so it is fun :) And while plane's physic model in orbiter is limited (no wind is main issue), it is more realistic then that of rovers :)

It's not promoting outside mainly, it's to promote inside, to show how great orbiter is.

If anyone would like to volanteer for this please PM me.

Promoting it to the "inside" seems a bit pointless, we are all quite dedicated arn't we?

If you want a feeling on how great orbiter is, go to the screenie thread...

Are you proposing chainflight-event where every participant flies some part of transcontinental flight and sends it to nest pilot? If so I could possibly join it.
(And yes, "promoting " is strange term, I'd rather prefer doing just for fun of doing it)

Thats what i was thinking, alot of the greatest achievements of man is becuase we just wanted to, why did Lindenburgh fly the Atlantic he wanted to, why did Neil step of the ladder, he wanted to.

No one actually told him he had to step on the moon, they all expected him, the government wouldnt have no matter in it, by law the government shouldnt stick there nose into an civilian agency.

I think they might have been a bit pissed off back home if he hadn't stepped out.

"Houston, we have touchdown on the lunar surface, but the weather is looking a bit dubious. I think I'll stay in and finish my book".

Not a good career move by any measure ...

It's a bit of a barmy notion. A purely atmospheric flight, to promote a space flight simulator? That's like loading up FSX, hopping into a sea plane and taxiing popular shipping routes.

And why would we need to promote Orbiter 'within'?

Lindbergh flew across the Atlantic because no one had before. And he did it in real life, not in a sim. Plenty of people have flown around the world, granted only once non stop, but I can't see the appeal of doing it in Orbiter. Try posting this on an FSX forum.

And NASA a 'civilian, non government agency', what?

US Government: "Hey there, NASA, how's that Apollo program coming along? Any big steps completed yet? You know, we did give you $100 BILLION dollars, but no rush, in your own time."

NASA is a pure US Government agency, and always has been. There isn't really such thing as a 'civilian agency', unless you mean like a squash club, or something. :)

I fly around the world once every 90 minutes in Orbiter. I can't see how this is something special. In the atmosphere, I can do this in maximal 5 hours, when I use a more orbiter like hypersonic wave-rider.

And about don't care... When LazyD died, almost the whole community took part in a online memorial, visiting a monument on the moon dedicated to him by using the autopilot LazyD programmed.

You may think, cancer, AIDS, starvation or other things which are not changeable by humanity are things, that people need to be remembered on and Orbiter be used for promoting awareness... but the community seems to be more interested in things which really affects them directly.

If you really want to do something good, here is my solution:
Before Christmas, buy 6 tiny presents, like what you can afford. Start orbiter and imagine each present being one of the Shuttle-A payloads. If you want to be creative, make a Christmas present payload module for the Shuttle-A. Launch from the moon into a low polar Earth orbit, passing over the pole on December 24. Align the orbit with your home town and begin a powered reentry over it. Aim for your hometown and drop all presents at enough altitude to return to space again.

Watch the presents land and write down the landing coordinates of each present. On, December 25, take the 6 presents and visit each landing location. Find out who is living there or when you hit a non-residential area, be creative to find the recipient of your present. Be modest. When asked, just say that you wanted do something good.

Wouldn't Virgin Galactica be considered a "civilian agency"? Or perhaps thats just a corporation?

They're just a company, I suppose. Like SpaceX. An 'agency' to me implies a constituency within something greater, like a Government. Not an entity in it's own right.
