If we consider the dimensions of the milkyway, the current position of the probe and how long it is travelling already, it's actually scary how big our galaxy is, let alone the universe. It takes 230 million years for our solar system to orbit the center of the milkyway once...
Also, that we still receive data shows that space is really empty. There is nothing really between the probe and us. But the same comes into my mind when I look at the stars at clear nights. The light has traveled so far and just enters my eyes. Amazing.
46 years and they didn't even nearly reach the oort cloud. When they do, the children of my children and even their children will be dead already, if I had children
And it all started by making fire to process food, after at least 5 mass extinctions. Our planet is a miracle
The mission team wanted to fix the thrusters, deemed unusable decades ago, before the radio antenna that sends commands to the probe went offline for upgrades.
This is quite fascinating as well. Amazing how these two probes just keep going on so little power.
Engineers are confident that shutting down the LECP will give Voyager 1 about a year of breathing room. They are using the time to finalize a more ambitious energy-saving fix for both Voyagers they call “the Big Bang,” which is designed to further extend Voyager operations. The idea is to swap out a group of powered devices all at once — hence the nickname — turning some things off and replacing them with lower-power alternatives to keep the spacecraft warm enough to continue gathering science data.
