I just did my first successful reentry with the XR5 Vanguard! Following a nominal launch from KSC, the first few modules for an orbital outpost were assembled upon the ship's docking port. Following undocking the ship deorbited, and LANDED AT A BASE THIS TIME!! She was eventually brought to a nice, gentle touchdown at Runway 33 at KSC

Congrats on your first re-entry :speakcool:. My very first one was a disaster. Needless to say, there was more than rain falling from the sky in China that day.

Today, I was bored so I was like "I'll dock the XR5 to the ISS, transfer crew and then re-enter."

Everything was fine, but that was the most hellish and difficult re-entry/landing I ever did. I didn't heat up much during EI, but I was off target by 2000 kilometers (I was shooting for SRC Space Port). So I fire up the airspeed hold to Mach 3, and engage SCRAM engines. About halfway down, my coolant hits critical. So I slow down carefully to about Mach 0.3 and open the radiator. It didn't fail fortunately, and I cooled down to about 60%. So I pull in the radiator and continue to 800km. After that, I shut down SCRAM with about 25% fuel left and throttle up main engines to 85% to accelerate. Around that time, my main fuel hits critical at about 500km from the base. I think "oh crap, this is it", but an idea comes to my head. I transfer 50% of RCS to main tank to raise main to 4%. I still have very little main fuel, so gunning it is not an option. I start SCRAM again, this time flying carefully. I make it to 100km from base and 15km altitude (I was using all my fuel to gain alt in case I have to glide). Again, my coolant goes critical, and I do the same to lower it. But what's this? SCRAM fuel depleted? I murmur ":censored:, why didn't I pack more fuel? :fool: ". I transfer the rest of RCS to main, restoring it to 4%, and head towards SpacePort at Mach 1.5. By now, I am about 20km away and can see it clearly. So I align with the airstrip and prepare to land. At 2km away, gear down and engine throttleback to 25%. 1% main fuel left. I open hover doors, as a safety measure in case I'm not able to flare. I transfer a little bit of fuel to RCS to get that extra control. 500m to runway. I begin to flare and I arm my drag chute. Touchdown! Drag chute deploys slowing me down. As I stop, I notice that main fuel is 0.5%, RCS is 0, and Scram is 0.

There is no drag chute on the XR5.
Your only measures to stop are the wheel brakes, drag (airbrake) and the retro thrusters.

But it would be sure nice to have one. Especialy if you come down with cargo.

Nah...
If I don't have a big red button on the panel, the ship has no chute in my book.

There's no big red IMFD button in the XR5, but you still use it, don't you TSPenguin? :P

About halfway down, my coolant hits critical. So I slow down carefully to about Mach 0.3 and open the radiator. It didn't fail fortunately, and I cooled down to about 60%.

That's a nifty little trick, I'll have to learn to do that. Mach 0.3... do you remember what the dynamic pressure was like?

As I stop, I notice that main fuel is 0.5%, RCS is 0, and Scram is 0.

Man, go out and buy a ticket in the lottery. RIGHT NOW. :) Because, damn, that's some huge luck right there.

Actualy I don't use it. I use TransX and that doesn't do anything to my ship. Since the latest release I don't even need BurnTimeCalcMFD.

So don't assume to know how I fly my ships. If doug knew how I reenter his vessels, he would erase all his data, set his house on fire and go diving with cement shoes in a barrel full of acid. In the house!

I don't know, but I guess it can be tested. Altitude was 5km, velocity Mach 0.3. (I didn't bother to get the GS or IAS)

I'm 14, so that rules out the lottery... In America, you need to be 18 to buy lottery tickets

Congrats on your first good reentry and landing! That's a significant milestone!

Now do it with DGIV ;)

The most odd reentry and landing I've had was when I was tring to get XR5 to the Moon.

I fly up to like 25 km at full SCRAM and main thrust to gain 1.5 km/s at 25 km attitude. Then I shut down main fuel and let the SCRAM engines take me almost to orbit. I fly right at the edge of burning my ship, right until the SCRAMs are gonna blow. I made it into orbit with 74.2% main fuel left... so I though that's enough to get to the Moon and land with ease. I do my burn... but for some reason I missed the Moon. So I'm like... wth and start planning how I'm gonna get back and land.

Then the LOX alarm comes on and I'm like... oh no!
Usually when ever I'm returning from the Moon, I use the atmosphere to slow down. I just set the PeA to around 55 kms and it's usually enough to slow me down to remain in orbit and not destroy the ship. Then I wait for an optimal reentry window. But this time I couldn't do that with 11 hours of LOX left. So I set my PeA and dump fuel, knowing that reducing mass is the only chance I have to survive. Sure, I barely made it with temps going crytical to white, but was ejected into the atmosphere. So yea, now I'm over Australia and thinking: "Crap, I'm dead!" and the next thought was: "Damn it! Why did I dump so much fuel?!". I dump SCRAM fuel right after stop using SCRAMS to dump excess weight to get me better acceleration for burns, so SCRAMs weren't an option.

I looked at my Map MFD and saw that it was gonna take me over South America and start thinking... "Hmmm, how close can I get to Cape?"
I started reajusting my orbit with main engines, but with 5% of fuel left, I couldn't do much. Then I transfered all the RSC but 15% to main engines and burnt that. But the orbit would still take me a few thousand kms from Cape, so I when I came back into the atmosphere, I started using it to turn.

After a while I managed getting my orbit over the Cape, but the APU fuel got low... and I knew I didn't have enough to get back. So what I opened AeroBreakMFD and used it to plot my corse to bounce off the atmosphere. Doing that show me flying 3000 kms over Cape... so I finally knew I had enough energy to get there. But the main problem now was APU fuel. I knew I barely had enough for landing, let alone getting there. So I held Delete to change my aileron to pich me up and leveld the ship... then I turned APU off. After that, I was pretty much sitting here for a while until the ship got close to Cape. By then, I only had 4% of RSC fuel remaining.

I turned on APU and RSC, piched up, slowed down and started gliding towards Runway 33. It ended up being a perfect landing :)

I rarely aerobrake lol. But when I tried to (with the Apollo CM after coming back from the moon), i set PeA at 60km and had to endure about 9 re-entries before finally coming down.

I do a lot of "experimentation"
I must have trashed at least 5 XR5s by now, about 15 XR1s, killed several XR1 crews by forgetting the radiator, and destroyed at least 30 DGIVs.

I can't wait till XR2 comes out so I can crash some of those too.

Well, you definitely hold the records for XR-5 and XR-1, but I definitely hold the record for crashing DGIV's. Must have done around 200 by now.

I experiment with stuff like........ landing with broken gear. Landing with one engine on full thrust while the other is down... and the gimball not compensating...

Hell, I even land with my only controls being Insert and Delete.

And of course, sometimes stuff goes wrong xD:lol:

Yeah, I experiment by attaching boosters to an XR5 to make a shuttle. The stack went about 15 feet, but at XR5 throttleup, it fell apart.

well ive can do that ans more i can reenter and land the XR-5 with both eves closed using only the "Q" key and presing it with my toung with the speekers turned off

so there
