While looking for images of Japanese spacecraft concepts, I happened to stumble upon this:

In the first image, there are what appears to be station modules derived from the H-II Transfer Vehicle, as well as Kibo, a solar truss with hexagonal panels (I wonder how those deploy), and something that looks like the Automated Transfer Vehicle.

I can't quite make out exactly what's in the bottom picture, but there's a larger version of the hexagonal panels, a spaceplane attached to an upper stage, as well as other space stations and spacecraft.

I found another one, called the "JSS"（Joint Space Station/Japan Space Station).

Kibo, Columbus, and the Harmony and Unity nodes are re-used from the ISS. A HTV derivative provides solar power.

Proposals from the bubble economy days of Japan (1980s), before the collapse and subsequent "Lost Decade":

"A $15.86-billion Japanese spaceplane approaches a new Japanese space station. The space station would cost $7.31 billion and be developed in 2000-2008 while the fully reusable horizontal takeoff-and-landing spaceplane would be developed in 1989-2006. Space factories and the original international Space Station Freedom are visible in the background."

"The 2005-2010 time period would be dominated by manned and unmanned industrial activities in Earth orbit. Meanwhile, the Japanese proposed to launch an ambitious unmanned lunar & Mars exploration program in 2000-. This would have culminated in manned outpost on the Moon by 2019 (top) followed by a large base on Mars by the mid-21st century (bottom right)"

I still wonder how the hexagonal arrays (in the image from the original post) would be folded up for launch.

Sadly, Japan can't have all these nice things, because of demographics and economic problems as I have learned in late 2013.

Space station concept by the Taisei Corporation, called "Golden Bird." According to Google Translate (I know it's bad), it's a factory.

And it reminds me of the H-10-K Enterprises Gateway Station.
