News Farnborough 2010

They shop them in, no picture of our fair nation is complete without an overcast sky!

You want a bit of overcast, having the sun beating down on you whilst you try to find the plane against the glare of the sun is no fun!

Aint no cloud like a British cloud... >.>

Don't know where they got the grey skies, its been a nice week, except for the thunderstorms.

Do I hear teeth grinding?

Nice engine sound. No surprise that many Vulcans got reported as UFOs in the 1950s. Now, the display would have been perfect if the Vulcan also dropped some sweets on the crowd from the open bomb bay ^^

From what I heard last time I looked at their website, it could have been nuts and bolts dropping from the bomb-bay! It all went quiet, and I'd assumed it wasn't displaying this year, they were short of cash.

Good to see it in the air, and strange how it sounds very different from Concorde, though they shared engine developement I think. Just going off memory when it used to do a 09 departure from Heathrow, and do a 180 to the South. It very nearly flew over my flat, and had a marvellous view as it went West. Used to stop the traffic on Kingston Bridge(pedestrian anyway).

The main parts of the Olympus engine are still the same, but I think the long afterburner pipe of the Concorde changes the sound a lot.

Yes, not sure if Concorde was still on afterburner when I used to see it, bit of smoke and lots of noise. It was a very noisy aircraft compared to what's coming out of Heathrow now. The air used to "crackle" as it disapeared over Hampton Court Palace, bet that woke Henry VIII up...

Farnborough was amazing, especially the Typhoon! I got to speak to one of the Reaction Engines engineers which was pretty interesting too. :)

As for weather, it was getting bad towards the end of the day, beautiful at the beginning though.

EDIT: that Vulcan video needs more of the howl of intake resonance (or whatever it's called):

For input of your talk to the RE engineers, please. Not that I'm a groupy or anything...

Other thimg, it sounded like the Vulcan on landing had some throttle changes? Either way, good for it.

Edit: Managed to watch your recording eventually, what a beauty, and nicely recorded. That aircraft has a natural elegance.

According to an article by Ian Young, who flew with XH558, the significant ground effect of the plane requires same care with the throttle, since it has the tendency to raise again if you are too fast.

Also I don't know if the Vulcan has reverse thrust. The nozzles don't look like it.

It's not my recording, I just pulled it off YouTube. Also, what do you mean by your first sentence?

Sorry Dambuster, I wan't clear.
Just interested in your chat. Any news come out of it, and any developement in the engines?

Thanks, N.

Nothing too much, just found out a bit about the TPS and heat exchanger. He said they should be testing the exchanger within a few months (by the end of this year, I think). He also mentioned what they'd be using to test the exchanger, but I forgot to ask what it was!

EDIT: I was mostly asking about the history of the project, and the spaceplane itself, rather than the engines.

All news is good news, thanks for that.

I think the heat exchange test involves a viper jet engine:

They had a short video of this facilty on their site, but it seeemed to have been removed.
