ORBITER-FORUM will be temporarily closed at 2026-07-23 18:00 UTC while we complete some OF maintenance tasks. The amount of downtime is expected to take up to one hour, but probably less.
Ok, so a coupla things for your feedback please.
First, the ground-based origami drydock. I have experimented with a few options and it's proving harder than expected to get the result I want. I think one of the problems is that it feels like it needs more structural integrity than the...
Can you clarify your idea a bit please, I'm not sure I fully understand you.
Are you suggesting organising a history of orbiter addons, with the timeline representing the date they were created?
Or are you suggesting organising a complete history of real world space flight using orbiter...
Those dodgy polys on the corners shown in the 2nd pic looks like either a vertex normal or a vertex order problem to me, or something similar.
Unfortunately I don't use anim8or, so not sure what tools it has for changing those things, but its something that can definitely be fixed.
Ah, interesting thought I hadn't considered gents. I don't think this specific design would work in that regard, as the docking port is central and the octagonal shape is somewhat wasteful for a surface hangar. But, if the origami idea is popular, I could develop a ground based version...
ha, thanks for the compliment, you should see the pile of shoulders I'm standing on! :)
As to the design, yes, I mean it's "workmanlike"nature. The oppression for me comes from the bars, making it a bit cage-like. But that's just my design tastes, so kudos for making and releasing a decent...
That's quite sweet actually. I love the nostalgia of the old style space paintings.. is that a stolen soyuz in the service bay? ;)
Well, since the general feedback in this thread so far is not just howls of laughter, I may pursue all this stuff further. Need something to launch from AU when...
Ok chaps, new toy for you to look at!
I decided to explore the original drydock concept I had, whereby it could fit in the payload bay of an XR5, yet be large enough to service DG class vessels.
So, after some origami, I came up with the following (very WIP obviously):
You may like this...
Nice idea paddy, cargo management systems are always welcome.
The design is perhaps a little oppressive for my tastes though, but horses for courses. :)
This is an interesting project, and I'm sure its technically far more feasible than the 'near future' stuff I do. Kudos on the work. Anyhow...
Although I like the look of the solar panels, and look forward to seeing their deployment an animation, but they strike me as being a bit inefficient...
Cheers for the positives, chaps. Nice to know I might have a worthwhile idea here. It's actually quite a fun one to do too.
I'll go out on a limb here and say nice idea, but aint ever gonna happen. Most modders do attempt to at least standardise dock sizes to some degree. But donamy does...
Ok, so I've had a little further play based on the feedback and my original thoughts.
Again, these are very rough 3D concept sketches atm.
This one shows how 2 more struts can be added to the module, to allow expansion in the Y axis.
this one, shows it in situ. A central vertical truss...
You found it, I found it, urwumpe obviously found it... The list goes on. I do see what you're saying, I just think your argument is moot.
This for me is a more valid argument, but i suspect more effort than it is worth. Besides, for the best impact in this regard i think it needs to beused...
I'm in the same camp as Gary, ie. people who want orbiter, will find orbiter. I think that very fact is key to out community haing the devoted members it does.
That said, Let us not forget the tireless efforts of the OF admin/moderator crew who keep this community on the straight and narrow...
Well the coding spiffyness would come down to the effort of some kind soul other than myself, but I have given it some thought. At one end of the complexity spectrum, you can have an animated mesh with docks and attachments. At the other end you have an mfd or control input to manage cargos...
You mean have each truss length separate to allow for even more modular construction, and probably fitting more in a single xr5 bay in one Load? I am considering this as well, and even considered the idea of having the structure have multiple levels, making it possibly cuboid. But I want to...
Ah yeah gotcha. And yes, the docking nodes could easily have a second dock on the top plane too of that purpose. Obviously the xr5 would be that way aligned using the end port, due to its vertical docking port.
The skylon is to something I've not used before, I'll have to check out the mesh...
Can you elaborate on that suggestion, I'm not quite getting you. Cheers.
Interesting docu. So is that actually a request for an orbital 'dry dock' of sorts? If so, I do have some ideas in that regard on a drawing board somewhere, but the trick is making it both XR5 hold and docking/attachment...
I've been pondering an idea for a while now, and finally got to some rough modelling of concept ideas today. I'm interested in people's feedback on the idea before I proceed.
And yes, I know AU still needs finishing lol, but the current release round is waiting for code, and I fancied making...
This is looking really special, some superb modelling/artwork and the coding functions sound great! I'm very happy to see Russ on board too.
I'm particularly taken by your talk of the cargo/crane system, look forward to testing this addon. Will the source code be open source when it is done?
I'm interested to see how this turns out, I was playing BARIS again only the other week. Great game, but bloody hard! Hopefully this one will be more user friendly. But, that said, my worry is that the competition aspect of BARIS may be lost without the cold war space race thang. And with it...
