EDIT: This thread's going faster than I expected. That link limits the resolution to 500px^2. Here's the full 640 and cropped from Wikipedia.

:hmm: Obviously their compositions are different, but I think Pluto and Mars look similar at that resolution.

I just found this animation from Thales, it's pretty detailed:

NASA: "New Horizons’ Last Portrait of Pluto’s Puzzling Spots" Didn't realize that Notebook already posted it above me.

Updates NASA New Horizons Mission Updates

I don't think the Eyes on the Solar System simulation is entirely accurate. New Horizons will get plenty of data during closest approach from the smaller moons. We can also expect a mosaic of Charon that's slightly higher resolution than Pluto's in the next few days. A timeline of the first...

Updates NASA New Horizons Mission Updates

True. You don't want the investigators to retire/die before a $3.2 billion, 2 ton spacecraft finally arrives at Pluto. The story that the image comes from is very interesting.

Updates NASA New Horizons Mission Updates

New Horizons would require several more RTGs to power a thruster similar to the one on Dawn. If that amount of plutonium was available, the spacecraft would be much heavier. The mission's scientists and engineers obviously thought that a fast transit had more benefits than downsides.

Updates SpaceX Falcon 9 F5 CRS SpX-2 through CRS SpX-12 Updates

:censored: The past few months have been very bad for resupply launches. And this is SpaceX's first F9 launch failure. How will the ISS crew be affected now? Yes, it was right before engine cutoff and first stage separation.

    Question What are you reading?

I liked The Martian, but I felt that it had too much go wrong with no time to breathe. Everything that could fail almost always did, but that was the point of the novel. There's one failure in particular that seems impossible to overcome. WARNING: SPOILERS At the end of the book, Hermes has to...

    Gaming Fallout 4 Announced

That's a good point. I don't know what's canon, but I think the excuse would be that the high energy radiation kills or mutates everything. The game's ghouls, super mutants, and gigantic, mutated insects are far from realistic too. Forests of green grass, trees, and flowers aren't exactly the...

    Gaming Fallout 4 Announced

Reasons I need more powerful hardware: Deus Ex: Mankind Divided Fallout 4 Metal Gear Solid V Arkham Knight Grand Theft Auto V Cities: Skylines I may be missing a few. If Human Revolution didn't impress me so much, Fallout 4 would easily be on top. Fallout 4's features shown in the conference...

Updates NASA New Horizons Mission Updates

Here are the raw images for reference. Pluto still looks a bit lumpy which I assume is due to the inability of digital cameras to capture high dynamic range scenes. So brighter features on Pluto would be blown out while darker ones turn black. Processed: Triton doesn't have any (known)...

Updates NASA New Horizons Mission Updates

Pluto is in hydrostatic equilibrium, it only looks lumpy due to the limitations of New Horizon's camera, or any digital camera for that matter. But Pluto is a pretty uniform sphere. The dwarf planet is icy, lacking an active silicate crust so mountains cannot be formed (a result of it being...

Gaming The Kerbal Space Program - Version 1.2.x

With the efficiency of an ion engine, I have managed to orbit Moho. The orbital insertion "burn" took about 20 minutes after I exhausted the remaining fuel on the nuclear engine. That's definitely not realistic. Due to the high efficiency of ion propulsion, I used less than half of my xenon...

News Low-Density Supersonic Decelerator (LDSD) Atmospheric Test Flight

More shredded than this? I found footage of the test flight, but it's the low resolution version that was downlinked and played live. The chute deployment occurs at 4:37:07, but the resolution is too low to tell how bad the deployment was.

    The Martian

I hope the actual movie does not have any social media posts and crew facts pop up on the screen. They're distracting, and the Twitter-esque posts will make the movie dated instantly. The movie should let audience see the characters' backgrounds of the rather than lazily cluttering the screen...
